I have a HD ready Pioneer pdp-435xde plasma tv, kef 3000 speakers and a denon amp with a denon 1930 dvd player.

I'm looking at getting a blu-ray player but my plasma tv isnt 24fps. Can anyone tell me what blu-ray player would compliment my setup, and whether I would even get a much better picture? Is it worth me buying into blu-ray? I'm most interested in the Panasonic model

Thanks 12

I have the Panasonic BD30 and am very impressed. If you want an alternative though, I would suggest waiting for the Denon (£1000 estimated) or pitching for the £300 playstation - can't really go wrong with good quality blu ray and games console!

Now, I'm no expert in this 24fps malarkey! However, I've just checked my PS3 and it has a setting (under the Settings > BD / DVD Settings menu funnily enough) which says "BD 1080p 24Hz Ouput" and there are three settings:

Automatic
Off
On

Mine is on Automatic, but I think my Panasonic works okay with 24fps. I have no idea what setting it to Off would do, but I can test it at some point if this would help? Alternatively, there might be someone who knows this answer instantly, saving me time during a busy week!

Of course if you're dead set against owning the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player (as some are), then I won't bother!

Which model Denon amp do you have and does it decode TrueHD / dts-MA or accept multi channel PCM over HDMI? Depending on what the answer is (and whether High Def audio is important to you) may influence which player would be most suitable.

For example if your amp is relatively new and high range and decodes TrueHD / dts-MA then the Panny BD30 would probably be a good player to go for.

If your amp has HDMI but only accepts multichannel PCM and doesn't decode TrueHD / dts-MA then the PS3 might be a good player to consider (as it decodes TrueHD / dts-MA onboard and then outputs multichannel PCM over HDMI).

If your amp doesn't support audio over HDMI (or isn't HDMI at all), but has 5.1 (or 7.1) analogue inputs then you might want to wait for the Panny BD50 (or Sony S550) which should be able to decode TrueHD / dts-MA onboard and be able to convert them (along with native PCM tracks) for output as 5.1 analogue (7.1 for the S550). Neither of these players have been released yet though so no-one knows quite how they will perform (though if the BD30 is anything to go by the BD50 should be top knotch).

thanks for your replies. my denon amp is a 2307,although it dose have hdmi, its not true hd compatible, off which im not that botherd, would i get a much better picture from the panasonic blu-ray and what trouble would i have, because my pionner is not 24fps, its only 100hz 1080i 720p my main worry is can my plasma do the panasonic bd justice. and is it worth me getting it. or should i just keep with my denon 1930 dvd player.

many thanks, 12
