Hi guys, im in the region of around 1000 dvds (including box sets). Its just a thought at the moment. I was thinking about putting all my dvds on to some type of storage/media drive.

What type of storage drive do i need?

What size do i need to be looking at?

What software do i need to use?

How long would an average dvd take to upload?

How do i or would the movie info/art be uploaded also...?

Hi, I've just started out on the same journey as you. :shifty:

I've been using J River Media Center on my PC to listen to FLAC files on my HiFi for a few years now so I thought I'd use it to do the ripping for DVDs as well. Ripping in full quality takes 20-60 minutes for a 2 hour film and is normally ~6Gb. J River will look up lots of meta data including artwork. I bought a Synology DS214 play and put two 4Tb Western Digital Red drives in it, one doing a full backup of the other.

I'm about halfway through ripping the DVDs and the next stage is to find a video steamer for the bedroom, I'm thinking of a WD TV Live.

In the lounge my PC is directly linked to the TV and Amp so playback isn't a problem at the moment but as the PC has cooling fans it's a bit noisy for quiet music listening so I've been thinking about a dedicated Hi-Fi streamer, maybe the pioneer N50. I'd be interested in people's advice on cheap and cheerful video units for the bedroom and more audiofile units for the lounge.
