Since today is my well deserved regular day off I decided to put on some vinyl to listen to. The usual ones I listen to are the ones that I have bought from Audio Affair- which are of good quality but I just decided to put my girlfriends old black sabbath album (we sold our soul for rock 'n' roll) & it just sounds fantastic! why is that? is it the pressing? I have some other old records that I bought cheaply from the second hand shop & they sound awful! Any tips to find those gems?

Hi all, this is my first post on this forum.
I collect vinyl records and i tend to get most of mine off ebay. I seem to have a nack of picking up quality copies. I do buy from record shops, record fairs and new off Amazon and other online traders. I always try to pick up excellent / near mint and pay that little bit extra in doing so. Some late 70's / 80's vinyl can be of a lesser quality due to the vinyl used at that time. The ones you have bought cheaply from second hand record shops may sound awful because they may need a good clean or have been played many times. There is quality vinyl out there it's just a case of being picky and going for the best quality possible.

Is it a UK or US or German pressing?

UK pressings from the 1970s were generally awful and - due to the oil crisis - often made with thin, recycled plastic. However, a lot of the German and US pressings of the time were a lot better and often on sale alongside their UK versions.

cleaning will bring great improvements. there are good hi-fi shops who will clean them, for a price, try the ones that use keith monks m/c.very succsefull with some of my grubby vinyl. you can find list of dealers who offer service at kiethmonks-rcm.co.uk

Only after 1973. Before that they were superb - which probably includes Black Sabbath.

Yeah I've got a Jim Reeves box set from about 1970, it's very, very good.

Black Sabbath's 'We sold our soul for Rock 'n Roll'* was released in December 1975.

hmmm...still not any wiser as to how I will be able to spot a gem in the local 2nd hand vinyl shop?? any more stuff I could look at for?

the_lhc:Pull the disc out of the sleeve and try to get a feel for the weight and thickness, bad ones are horribly thin and bendy. Thanks for the pointer 🙂

When you buy second hand always try to look at the vinyl under a light if possible. I always find it will show up and imperfections. Natural light unfortuently can make a records surface seem better.
