What's the best, cheap way to clean vinyl? I'm thinking about getting a dry brush (such as the Clearaudio Carbon Fibre Record Cleaning Brush) but do they work, and do they damage the record?

If you can stretch to around the £12.00 mark there is a product called Permaclean which is a cleaning spray that is very easy to use. Along with the spray you get a duo pad to wipe the chemical off the record. It cleans your records nicely but I wouldn`t say it gives them a deep clean. You`d need to buy a record cleaning machine for that. I would recommend this product over just a dry brush. Oh, quick word of warning, it isn`t suitable for 78`s or acetates but you can use it on cd`s and dvd`s as well as vinyl.

Ok! Cheers! I'll check it out!

Oh, and while we are on the subject of vinyl...I was just listening to The Unforgettable Fire U2 on vinyl and on the first track "A sort of homecoming", until half way through the song, there is little coming from the right channel and then all of a sudden it very suddenly comes in! It's the same place on the record every time...very wiered! Anyone know why this happens?

Why do you need to clean them? Are they going to sound any better when you have? You might even damage them cleaning them,

When I bought my Rega it said there is no need to clean and I never have.

I must have cleaned over 2500 LPs in the last few years and never damaged one. And yes, it can often significantly improve sound quality, as well as prolonging the life of your stylus.

Really, all I want to do is remove the dust from the vinyl to get rid of some hiss and pops...not to "deep clean" them - I don't believe in doing that. What's the best if I just want to do that?

Carbon Fibre brush then.

I'll be interested to hear if Brock Boogie has any opinion here, I think he's got the biggest vinyl collection on this forum.

Carbon brush is just fine. Unfortunately you cannot avoid dust on vinyl - even the act of removing a record from its sleeve creates static which attracts dust.

Unless the record is visibly dirty, I'd avoid sprays not because they don't work, but because you only need them if you accidentally tipped that last glass of wine over your precious mint condition Sgt Pepper.

Or my precious now-not-mint condition full-blue-triange Dark Side Of The Moon WHICH HAS WARPED BADLY FOR NO REASON RENDERING IT UNPLAYABLE!
