USED vs. BRAND NEW

What are the pros and cons of buying used vs. brand new Hi-fi components? Does buying used mean some sort of compromise, or sacrifing quality while trying to save some money. Views welcome.

I have found "refurbished" or "factory reconditioned/reprocessed" (such as from the official Apple refurbished store, or Moorgate Acoustics for Cyrus components) can save hundreds of ££, but you are getting a piece of kit that has been thoroughly checked over by the factory (some could say "Custom Shop") and has full manufacturer warranty.
