I have recently been listening to a lot more music played on my laptop,
which is connected to my amp by a 3.5mm jack to RCA (2 phone). Obviously the
quality of sound depends on the quality of mp3 (most are 256kbps or higher), I know it wont match the reproduction of a CD.

Will a DAC improve the sound quality; would it have to be a USB DAC as my
laptop doesn't have an optical out?

Would the Beresford DAC mentioned on this forum be the product I am looking
for?

I know this subject has probably been covered before but any information or recommendations
are much appreciated.

In any case the Beresford is not USB. However, it can be used with a cheap USB soundcard such as the Roland UA 1EX (which I do), or you can buy a USB DAC (such as the forthcoming Cambridge DacMagic).

And YES, it will improve the sound considerably.
