I have a panasonic TH-37px80, great TV, I also have a panasonic DVD/video recorder. If I set the output on my DVD player to 1080p, as my TV is only HD ready ie output max 720p, will the TV downscale the picture to 720p or will the DVD player set the picture at 1080p? Any advice appreciated. Mel

If your screen cannot process 1080p, set your dvd player to 720p.

Yes, if you set the DVD player's output at 1080p, the Panny should accept it and downscale it to fit its native resolution, no problem. Some argue that setting it at 720p instead will theoretically give you better PQ (since there is less scaling involved), but then again some say that, even downscaled, the 1080p setting provides greater sharpness. It's entirely up to you - try both and see which you prefer.

EDIT: I have the TH-42PX70, which is essentially just the 42 inch 2007 version of your TV, melcisadeck - therefore I'm pretty sure it is capable of accepting and scaling a 1080p input,

Thanks for that Liam. I have been experimenting and found setting the output on the DVD to 1080p output produces a great picture. I just wondered whether using a good upscaling DVD in principle is a way of sidestepping the limitations of a TV that is only HD ready ie 720p output. Having said that, I have only had my Panny TH-37px80 about a month and I think the picture is wonderful, playing DVDs it is even better. I have yet to use a Blu ray player, which I imagine will be even better.

I have had my Panny 37PX80 for about 6 weeks now and I love it. I feed it with a 1080p upscaled picture from my Panasonic DMR-EZ47 (DVD & VHS Recorder). I'm really pleased with the picture and it upscales DVD's really well. Even VHS don't look half bad on it!

The TV's own upscaler is much better than say two generations ago (the PX60 range) - It gets Sky non-sub channels fed by RGB scart and does a great job of that and the internal Freeview picture has surprised me at how good it is.

As for the picture from my HDV camcorder - wonderful, crisp and only limited by the colour depth of the camcorder - but I can sort that in Final Cut or Vegas (if I ever get the time to edit).

Looking forward to getting a BD player and HD sat TV to feed it with more hi-def pictures.

I would personally just go for a DENON DVD 1940 which in my opinion offers as much clarity and definition as does the SONY BDPS350, Samsung DBP1500 and Panasonic BD30, though out of the 3 the DB30 is the best combining all of the attributes of the aforementioned and a bit more depth to picture quality

However the SONY Upscales DVD a whole lot better than the other two BD Players

If you really want a BD player to compliment your excellent choice of TV.............. go for the Panasonic

Gozaradio. Hi, I have the same TV and DVD recorder combination as you, and I agree they produce excellent results and work well together. The only negative I found was that on live football, the players tended to blur when charging after the ball, don't know if this is common, luckily I 'm not a football fan. Other than that, VHS is much improved thanon my old sony TV and DVD is just superb clarity and depth.
