Hi there!

I am preparing to upgrade my system (Marantz CD 5003+amp 7003+Mordaunt Short) and make a big step into high-end.

The (somehow Shakespearian) question is: Upscale Marantz (15PM S1...) or go for oane of the renowed specialists from Naim, Unison, Lyngdorf or even Roksan Caspian.

The budget is 4500 sterling max!

Thanx for helping

With that sort of budget I'd be seriously looking at Sugden.

However, the top end Marantz kit is stunning and takes the company's trademark musicality to a very high level.

To make more specific recommendations we really need to know what sort of sound you like, what kind of music you listen to and what you feel you are missing in your current set-up.

Whotever has the highest re-sale value. Re-sell you will but you could loose anarmandaleg if you get it wrong ... other than that its Naim XS/CD5x/Spendor/Neat or AVI's 9.1 plus sub and a nice holiday for me.

Most of the time (70%) I listen to jazz. 20% rock, hard rock, and 10% clasical

Well, drummerman, I found an ex-demo Marantz amp and cd from the 15S1 series at very good price, so this will help me not to loose much cash at re-sale.

But do they sound MUCH better that my Marantz (CD 5003 and AMP 7003)?

And how do they compare to Roksan, Naim, Unison, Lyngdorf???

I'd try out the Marantz, but think long and hard about spending £4,500 on anything more than that - the snake oil just gets poured all the harder and faster the further up the scale you go. I think it gets matured in "Deep justification" vats or something...

@the record spot: yeah, it's a lot of money...The worst aspect is that I love the way my combo works on the MS's...

However, the 15S1's I found (ex-demo) for 799/piece. I think it's very good price.

What speakers would you suggest for pairing the Marantz's? (Opera, Triangle, Spendor, anything else???)

Thanks a lot!

with your budget, don't rush into anything ... take your time, and also look at the used market

Good price on the Marantz; saw one in Edinburgh's Home Cinema Centre shop (who sometimes post on here I think) for £699 alongside the 8003 for the same price. Know where my cash would go, but had to move away VERY quickly. Promised Mrs. R_S that was it for the forseeable future when the Sansui amp came into the home a month back!

You seem very happy with the Marantz/MS combo so how about pairing that 15S1 series kit with a pair of MS Performance series speakers? I've heard the Marantz Pearl stuff driving Performance 6s on a couple of occasions and it sounded VERY special indeed. Would give you much more of what you already have, if that makes sense.

well, matthewpiano, I really cannot get close to those MS PErformance...

what will suit also the 15S1's?

thinking about some big Canton speakers, or some Monitor Audio Gold GS20'?

Thanx for advice!

I can only speak on behalf of my Lyngdorf, and you really should hear it if you can find a place that demos it.
