hi folks

no doubt i am opening some old wounds but can anyone tell me if it is worth upgrading my mains cables?

the copper line alpha power cables can be got for about 35 quid and i was thinking of getting 3 (TV, AVR and Blu Ray)

I am using a Tacima CS929 mains conditioner as well.

Will i see (or hear) much difference if i upgrade?

Cheers

Peter

let me summarise

some will say yes the difference is night and day and you get a free trial anyway so give it a go

some will say a bit but not on all their equipment

some will say its all in your head

its up to you

Check out the thread started by jase fox on mains cables, in particular russ andrews powerkords. Popular opinion is that upgrading your mains cable will make a difference and I also think it does. They are expensive but a gradual upgrade will see benefits in picture and sound.

They DO make a difference, IMO. But as pointed out, this is a highly contentious topic with differing views, sometime at extreme ends.

Hi Peter

As you realised much debate on this subject

I Concur with all thats said below

I personally have just bough / recieved t some RA cables , suggest you read Jase's thread on this

60 day money back guarantee cant be argued with , so try some

But out of interest you have a TACIMA , was it all you expected , this should guide you?

I didn't really think they would work, electricity just goes through wire, end of, i thought. But got some a few years back and they do, Another thing that's convinced me is i got my flat re-wired a year ago, replacing all the 1969 oxidized cable with new cable made a big difference in how my gear sounded(especially stereo).so i think getting a decent cable can only improve, maybe slightly, maybe quite a bit depending on different systems, state of wiring etc.., but worth it i reckon.

As previous people have mentioned - everyone says different. I was sceptical about it & after buying a tacima 6 way, i noticed a difference (i must have 'dirty' electric as its known...)

I have also changed the plug on the tacima to an MK silver tough plug with a Bussman silver plated fuse. I have also changed my skyHD & PS3 power wires to Supra LoRad 1.5mm wire & again i used MK tough plug silvers plated etc & then new figure 8 plugs for the other end with silver plated connections in. All seem good

The sound improved from just the tacima for my amp - unfortunatley the amp is a fixed wire to unable to change the power lead. But i have put a ferrite magnet around the wire to the amp to help with any mains/RF interferance. Again cant comment if thats helped but i still leave it on!

Just need to order 2m of supra lorad to change the plasma, have an MK toughplug & IEC plug both silver plated ready.

Oh good, my favourite topic........

Just upgraded my Clearer Audio Alpha mains cable to a Chord Power Chord on my Sony S350 blu ray player.............

Big difference in the depth and volume of bass, with extra clarity and detail to the sound. Vocals seem less 'tinny', but have gained some substance now..........

Don't just look at the Alpha.........the Chord range of mains cables are very good too. (As are Russ Andrews-bargains there too, at the moment.)

As always, the more you spend, the better it gets........Chord Power Chord retail at £120 ish per metre, but a certain well known internet shop are doing them for £60 delivered at the moment.....

Bargain, in my humble opinion.....

Just a note, has anyone thought of plugging an IEC powercord into a kettle and using it for about 1hr to help the cable burn in. High current flowing through a power cable should help.

tj27:unfortunatley the amp is a fixed wire to unable to change the power lead.

you could cut the cord, attach one of these (or similar) and upgrade the mains cable...

Thats what I did, Big Aura.........

But I also did that with the figure 8 connectors, as the standard adaptors don't tend to be overly successful, in my opinion....

thanks guys

i have ordered the cables - small enough outlay and hopefully i will see an improvement

i will post my findings
