Hi,

I think that my speakers are the weak link in my current system, so I'd
appreciate some advice on upgrading, and also on speaker placement
please. Apologies if it's quite a long (or confusing) problem statement
but there is much to tell!

I have the Onkyo HTS-6305 reciever/speakers combo. The amp seems good
(for the price range I'm looking at), but the speakers are nothing
special. The amp is capable of 7.1, with the 'extra' two channels being
either rear surrounds or front-high speakers. The geometry of my room
and the locations of embedded cables in the walls lends itself well to
the front-high option. So I intend to use the four Onkyo satellites as
surrounds and front-high speakers, and get something better for fronts
and centre.

I also use the room for stereo audio, and have a Cambridge Audio P/C 500
pre/power combo. I intend to use the same front speakers with both
amps, swapping between them with banana plugs. I currently have some TDL
KV1s for this, but again feel that the speakers are the weak link.

Please can I have some recommendations, preferably for something that
comes up second-hand on ebay with good frequency, below about £300 for
both front pair and centre?

My initial thoughts were Mordaunt Short MS902i and 905i, or something like the B&W 601/602 S2 and CC6 S2, second hand.

Alternatively, I can get a reasonable discount on brand new Pioneers, does anybody have any experience with the S31 bookshelf and centre
speakers? The sole review I found was of a whole system using
floorstanders as mains.

Also for placement of the front speakers, I am mounting my TV on the
chimney breast above the fireplace (don't worry, I've checked and it's
ok for heat). Should I place the front speakers around ear height as per
usual listening recommendation, or at TV height? The centre speaker
will be mounted immediately below the TV.

I have speaker cables in the walls to banana plug/binding post terminals
in all four top corners of the room, which I intend to use for
surrounds and front-high speakers.

Thanks in advance!

Ben

Hi Ben,

I had the 5305 version, was fairly happy with the speakers. I ended up changing the speakers only for the Tannoy Mercury Custom F3 5.1 speakers which i got fot £410 from Superfi.
