Updates to PS3

Hi all,

I have just purchased a Sony PS3 and will use it as my first blu-ray deck (until funds permit for a dedicated player) I understand that there have been a few firmware upgrades that are available from Sony's PS3 website that update the PS3's performance (ie 1080p upscaling/24fps etc) I dont currently have internet at home so I cannot get these updates, but I have been told that you can download these updates to a pc and then tranfer onto a USB device and then plug to PS3 to transfer/ update the system, please can you tell me if this is the case, also i have heard that soon the PS3 will have an audio update that will allow it to decode all the new hi-def audio codec, any idea when this may be?

There have been rumors of an upcoming firmware update that will allow it decode the new hi def audio formats. I have not heard anything more than that is supposed to be sooner rather than later.

If I hear anything more I will post the info on the forums.

Hi just wondering if you new which update version this is and if it is automatically done when you update through the PS3 online please?

I've just updated mine via a USB flash drive to version 1.93 and that has the 1080p 24 fps update on it, not that you can use it though unless you have a 1080p t.v.

The latest version is 1.93. I cant remember if the PS3 automatically checks and then gives you the option to update, when you sign in to the PS network. I think it does, but again, cant remember if I had to alter a setting to make it do this.

If it doesnt do it automatically when you sign in, just select SETTINGS , then SYSTEM UPDATE and it will check what update version you have to what the latest available version is.

If you are connected to the internet it is pretty hard NOT to update your PS3 to the latest firmware. It is very straight forward.

Hang on. I was under the impresion that if you bought a new PS3 today, that it would come with the new firmware installed. I thought that only existing owners would have to download the new firmware. Is that not the case? Seems silly that Sony would sell a product without pre-intaling the latest firmware!

Depends when the PS3 was manufactured compared to the Firmware release date. If you buy a new PC, more often that not, you'll have to update it straight out of the box.
