OK the Rega Fono MM is a nice little stage

You need to think about wether you want to go MC or MM and how much you want to spend on a cart

IMO if you have a £300 MM cart then the Rega Fono MM is more than adequate.

How about making the Cart your first change? The Exact is ok but there is a lot better out there such as Dynavector 10x5 high output MC (Rega Fono MM will run this) Nagaoka MP200 MM

Plenty of people can adivse you on here and this is only my opinion.

Cart & Phono matching isnt as simple as you think as there will be so many permutations of presentations

All comes down to what presentaion you want?

I have very little experience of dedicated phono amps. Apart from a budget Pro-Ject box that I owned once, I have used the onboard phono stages of the various amps I've had over the years.

My current Creek phono board is a fine performer to my ears, but I have nothing to compare it with. With the purchase of my new TT I'm wondering now whether the Creek Sequel 40 will get the best out of it.

Subjective I know, but what are peoples experiences of different phono amps, and how their playback was improved or not?

.

I see you have posted another thread about getting an different amplifier.

Why not just get an amp with an inbuilt phono stage and save yourself the trouble of a seperate phono pre-amp.

But in answer to this thread I'd have to say a second-hand Tom Evans 'Groove'.

Under 1000BGP BEST phono stage!

The one that sounds best to your lugholes in your set up , simples. So get out there and dem a few.

Scrap that as it appears you dont know if your backside has been punched or drilled at the min.

So is it a new Amp , TT, TT upgrade , Phono , Speakers or a complete new system .

I give up ,Im out.

In agreement there Floyd, I think probably 'punched' . . .

Got enough of my own probs., my JJ GZ34 rectifier valve went pop today!!! . . . been suspicious for a week or so . . . back on the old 'B29 potato masher' sent you pic last year. All is now sweetness and light. Wondering to try a Sovtek GZ34, all of £14, all the rest of the valves are Russian, the KT88's are Sovtek?

Sat down an hour ago, fired up the ST40, pop, crackle, puff, puff . . . what the f**££!!! h*!! . . . swapped over the phase splitters, problem moved with the swap. Changed the offending valve, sounding OK, needs burning in . . . ? So I've lost two valves tonight, keeping fingers crossed the 88's have survived?

We have 4 new houses being built 50 yards away. I noticed some irregularities in the mains supply just about the time they were connecting up to the mains in the road. Cant prove anything but the bias went to pot big time over a couple of days!!! . . . thats when I noticed it, how long it had actually been cooking I dont know?

Now Listening very carefully to gentle well known music . . . see how it pans out, problem was most obvious in the first 10 minutes from cold switch on? See what tomorrow brings?

If I was thinking of moving up a notch on the phono amp, I would like to investigate this one further..

The Rothwell Audio Rialto

This very recently won a group test in Hi-Fi Choice for similarly priced phono amps. This one retails for £379 and got a glowing review.

Built just up the road from where I live too.
