TV sound quality

What is better for TV sound quality ie live football; a decent 5.1 home cinema system or a decent soundbar?

I'm trying hard to convince myself that "TV sound quality" is not an oxymoron.

Which channels do you have accsess to? Not all of them support 5.1 audio, in which case a sound bar would be fine. I know for a fact ITV don't do 5.1 for anything as they don't have the set up to do so.

I think most of the Sky sports channels broadcast 5.1 so a good AV receiver will give you the best experience and should put you inside tha stadium with people all around you. as long is its all set up correctly.

Not probably the answer here but my old tv had a sub output - £100 sub worked wonders.
