I am listening to more and more vinyl and have decided that I should consider upgrading my TT in the coming months.

I listen to a vide variety of music generally but probably 75% of the vinyl I buy is jazz so any turntable would have to handle that well. In terms of appearnace I like quite traditional looking turntables and would need a design that either has a lid or could at least have one fitted.

My budget would be up to £1000 and i'd consider 2nd hand if I could hear a demo and pick it up personally. You seem to be able to pick up decent second hand linn sondeks for under £1000 or possibly a new Rega P5 or a higher spec Pro-ject. Anything else i should consider lining up for a demo? Are there any retailers within 100 miles of Manchester that have a particularly good selection of turntables?

Gyrodec / orbe definitely.

I got my gyro for well under £1k. Mint condition. Low miles. Good upgrade path. No motor noise, no vibration problems etc etc.

Great engineering. Very robust.

Lovely sound.

I went from a Debut to an RPM 5 which a very nice solid TT. Put a speed box on it and change the cartridge to one of the Rondo's you'll have a very capable vinyl player.
Another great TT you could get second hand would be a VPI Scout which regularly come up at auction, just make sure you by from a reputable seller.
A quick internet search would find you local dealers.
