To (banana) plug or not to plug, that is the question?

I keep getting mixed opinions about whether or not banana plugs are beneficial in connecting speaker cable. Magazines (for obvious aesthetic reasons) always show cables terminated with nice tidy plugs and there seems to be an opinion in that direction. With an AV amp and the already mass of cables behind it I can accept the tidiness part of the equation. On the other hand, I've had a couple of specialist dealers including a distributor so far tell me that banana plugs are not reqired, one suggesting that they could actually be detrimental - with a reasonably convincing argument that you're taking your nice clean cable and then putting a plug in the way, forming another set of connections and barrier to the signal flow. It definitely makes sense.I'm sure that the cable manufacturers would have us all believe that their plugs are essential as of course, its more money for them but what do the experts think?
