My system is as per my signature.....just got myself the panny bdt320 for £99.99 recently.

I use my marantz pm6004 to drive my front speakers, but got the stereo amp as I listened to a lot of CDs at the time.

Times have changed, and I'm thinking of going to an 'all in one solution', that will satisfy my ears with the occasional cd. The new receiver will have to have 3d/ARC/4k etc as my denon avr2310 came out before all of those features.

So which receivers are on my list?

These two........

Marantz SR6007 (£550)

or

Denon AVR3313 (£590)

Both have had good reviews from other sources, but which one would be best to go for? My friend has the Denon and I'm highly impressed with it, but I do love Marantz products and wonder if it would be a better option.....

Anyone demo these receivers together?

Thanks.........

BB is right, the two models you mention are in different price categories (or, more accurately, they were at launch).

So, your dilemma's are:

1) they are now both roughly the same price, meaning that the denon is, on paper at least, giving you more bang for your buck.

2) marantz and denon are made by the same manufacturer and ultimately share many components, but have traditionally been 'tuned' slightly differently and so do have a different sound. If you are used to the sound of your current marantz amp, and are using a marantz source, there is an argument you should stay with marantz.

3) but, point 2 is slightly negated by the fact you have already heard the denon and like what you've heard, which brings us back to point 1, generally the higher priced units in the denon/marantz receiver models will not just have a higher feature count but will also have better amplification/power transformers, so the two channel audio playback in the £1,000-£1,200 price band (ie the 3313) is likely to be better than the £700-£800 price point.

The fact your friend already has a 3313 is a plus here, take some of your favourite CD's and give them a good listen on your current system, then take the same discs round your friends, and make sure your happy with the two channel performance of his denon (bearing in mind he might have very different speakers, in which case take your own with you). Then get to a dealer and demo the marantz. My guy feel is you'll ultimately end up going the denon route but worth taking the time to make the right decision here.

Arn't Marantz and Denon basicaly the same?

I dont think you will be able to equal the sq you get from your stereo amp with that of an avr, adding one to mine was a massive improvement in sq for music.

A dedicated stereo amp will usually trump an AV amp for two channel playback, the question is whether that holds true for a £300 stereo amp vs a £1,100 AV amp, especially when both are from the same stable (as you say, denon and marantz are basically the same under the hood), hence why I think Pistol should take his CD's and speakers round to his friends house and make himself comfy for a few hours, to make sure he's aware of any differences and comfortable with them before deciding to go any further.

I was part of the Big Question feature in the mag 3 years ago, where we tested a budget stereo amp with 3 AV receivers at different price points. The stereo amp was better than the AV receiver 6-7 times its price. A lot of factors come into play here. A lot of money when buying an AV receiver goes into the video components and scalers. So there is a compromise on the quality of audio components. Besides, cramming audio and video in 1 chassis could result in interference from video components.

Had always used a rule of thumb of a 4:1 price ratio for broadly equivalent 2 channel playback between a good quality receiver and a two channel amp (ie a £1,200 receiver will be roughly comparable to a £300 amp), but only based on admittedly limited personal experience as gone down the 'receiver only' route for some time now. A ratio of 7:1 seems surprising - that a £300 amp will outclass a £2,000+ receiver - but can't argue with it if you've put the time on the test. Part of the decision will be about the degree to which Pistol wants the extra features on the new receivers, and how strong the desire is to simplify his system and reduce the number of boxes I guess.

Thanks to all of you who have spent some time replying to this.

Ive txt my friend and hope to go and have a listen to his system again. As he is borrowing my old Marantz cd67se CD player, I'll be happy to hear it through his new receiver and his older KEF speakers (IQ5SE).

If I'm happy with the sound with that set up, I see my speakers and CD player as I step up, so will seriously consider the change.

i would hope to get £200 for the denon 2310 and £200 for my marantz pm6004. Both in full working mint condition, and never been played very loud (-20db max) Sound reasonable?

Think you might be selling yourself a bit short at £200 for the 2310 Pistol (I managed to get £500 for my old 3310 less than a year ago), aim for £350 and you might get lucky. Let us know what you eventually decide?

Fair point, am sure he'd get more than £200 though? (unless the buyer is particularly looking for 3d pass-through).

To be honest Pistol if you could only get £200 I'd be tempted to hold on to it, and use it as the basis for a second room set up.

Second room set up? Lottery win needed before second set up is needed I'm afraid!!!

I based my predicted values from recent sales on another forums classified section. Not sure i can mention names on here....used to be very frowned upon last time I was in here....I assume it still is?

Are you refering to av forums?

WHFI should have it's own classifieds.

Guess its ok to say these days? Or will you be banned now? Lol

House rules were relaxed few months ago, and you're allowed to even link threads from other forums. Read the amended house rules.
Imho relaxing the rules has enhanced the user experiance of whfi, rather than taking users away.
