Ive tried the THX optimiser a few times now and the test with the 8 white squares(is it contrast or brightness?) doesnt work on my tv. Its the Panasonic TH-37px70b it doesnt matter how much you turn it up or down all the squares are always visible. Is it just the tv?

Don't worry, it's the same on my TV (KDL-40W4500). THX Optimiser is not the ideal solution, for better results try DVE HD Basics Calibration DVD.

strange been using it for years for setting up my kit - never yet found a tv or projector that its not worked on - although its more of a subtle differnec between shades of white than anything massive

The optimiser used to work excellently when I had a CRT TV, but seems to be rubbish with my plasma. If I set it up as per the optimiser I end up with a very poor picture with loads of noise in the darker scenes.

It used to work on my LG plasma but the contrast one doesnt work on my samsung. I have used 2 different ones on finding nemo and WALL.E. Both unsuccessful. I just have to use my judgement to set it.

A lot of newer displays are intentionally designed so that the user contrast control can not be set too high. This is manily to counteract problems like image retention but also has the useful side benefit of preventing extreme clipping in the image.

The Optimiser is certainly not the best possible solution for a basic setup but it is certainly better than nothing. Like any setup tool you do need to understand how to use it properly to get decent results. As an example, noise in the dark areas indicates that the brightness control is too high by a click or two.

It is worth noting that just looking a clipiing point of white is not ideal for setting up plasma displays. The RGB colours usually run out of headroom at different rates causing an effect called colour shifting. You can spot this by eye if you know what to look for but even I prefer to just measure the display to find the clipping point these days!

contrast setting does'nt work on my plasma either, but if you read the tv supplement from i think last month's mag,it runs through thx set up.it says if contrast setting is'nt too responsive, leave it high(up around max)and set all the other parameters correctly, the end result should be good,i did and it is.

Yeah its definitely the tv's as i own a TH-50px70b which always shows distinct shades of white even when turned to 100% but all of my previous tv's have always peaked out to a complete white and thats the same for all THX optimisers ive found on DVD's.

I used it on my Philips Ambilight and it totally messed up the picture. The blacks looked as though they had screen burn on every image. I went back to the factory presets.

Neil,

I've jusy posted about my experience of the THX settings. But separtately you mentioned about noise in dark areas. Can you explain this please because sometimes on movies there is slight image retentions noticable in the dark areas. Is this normal? I've also occasionally noticed when there are fast moving scenes that I can see a charachter's image stay on the screen a little as they move.

Thanks
