As far as I know, the tables themselves are very reliable so much will depend on the condition of the MC.

Collapsed/stiff suspension (and wear) is a possibility but with a little bit of further investigation/enquiring to the seller a little more light may be shed on this.

Re-tipping is possible.

If I had'nt just gotten a SL-7 and already have several others I would be very tempted. - Hell, I am very tempted now so someone please do me a favor and buy it.

Make a slightly lower offer and you may get it cheaper. Superb turntable.

The SL-7 is, apparently, better than the SL-10.

Much, I guess, depends on the cartridge.

Just bought an SL-6 for the collection for good measure.

I read that the SL-7 was quieter than in SL-10.

"Main issue on the SL-10 (cured, I believe with the SL-7) is that the arm motor can be quite noisy and sometimes "break through" into the audio signal".

The short spin I gave mine, through headphones, was superb, even with the lowly OMP5e. Dead quiet, no hum, no motor noise no nothing ... well music (Other than more record noise than I'm used to due to the Ortofon but it could have been the record I didn't brush ... see below).

The SL-7 also operates smoothly and silently. I am very impressed.

Got around to order the new, better RCA leads and will source an arm belt today. Really looking forward to get her undressed

The only thing I would say that the SL10 has over its cheaper sister is a handy 'spin without the lid down' feature for record brushing.

Still, figured if you hold the little white contact lever down and put a cheap record clamp (£9 on the bay) to hold the record down it works just dandily.

Ifor, the feet on my 7 are the same as the ones on the SL-10 and 15 (stock picture)

I am not sure as to why your service agent thought changing yours? They seem to work well and tension is adjustable.

my uncle had both the sl7 and the 10 ............if i remember rightly he did get rid of the 10 and kept the 7...........whats the sl6 like drummerman ?

Its a great Turntable and sounds good. The ideal companion for a life style system perhaps but good enough in its own right. A blast to use and it sounds like most non-vinyl user (ex-vinyl-users) would imagine ... large, warm and bouncy. As a DD/linear tracker it has good bass. Build is excellent.

With its original Technics cartridge highs are (slightly) soft but thats about it.

Get one.

Dunno but there is quite a bit of manufacturing/engineering involved in making these things. I guess it depends on whether they still have some of the tooling. - Otherwise they may outsource to someone like Clearaudio ... ?

A couple of years ago I pulled my SL10 down from the loft after many years of hibernation. Connected up, mains plugged in and away it went producing excellent sounds with no faffing about whatsoever. So many missed out on this excellent T/T because of the misguided obsession with LP12s etc which were always style and BS over substance.

Yes, they are as close to a maintenance free plug and go turntable as you are likely to find (as long as you find a good one). Totally recommend them. The lack of cartridge choice is overstated, there are quite a few if you are so inclined.

Having said all that, I also love my 'higher maintenance' and more conventional belt driven Thorens (It's not really high maintenance but a little bit more care in setting up is required).

Also because they were pretty expensive. Actually (IIRC) the hi-fi rags rated the SL10 highly at the time.

I agree totally with the 'BS' part of your comment about the LP12, but 'style'? No way on Earth could the LP12 have ever been accused of that!

i think the eps-310mc is a rare and highly sought after cartridge. They are expensive when available

I just picked up a SL-DL1. Unfortunately it's not working so I'll have to get inside to see what's wrong. Hopefully it's just the arm belt drive.

There were good reviews in some 'rags' but punters then came up against controlled dealers who had only one love affair. I remember that the SL10 wasn't inexpensive but, as it was the whole deal, more competitive than many 'conventional' and 'reasuringly expensive' alternatives.

You're right of course about 'style'. This is what happens when you use a common phrase without thinking about part of it in context. I never understood the LP12 love affair and I never saw anyone choose one over other T/Ts in a blind test demo. They still purchased the LP12 though, even thoughthey had preferred a different T/T in blind demo. Such is the power of BS.
