I am planing to buy a CD player and stereo speak for my 20-year-old Rotel Stereo Pre-Amp (Model RC 850) and Stereo Power Amp (Model RB 890). My existing consideration for CP player is NAD C545 BEE and Cambridge Audio AZUR 650C; as for the speaker: B&W 684 or EB Acoustics EB1. Anyone can help me with the match? Thanks. Simon Toh, Singapore.

I recently purchased a 22-year-old set of Rotel '870 pre-amplifier and power amplifier.

I then decided to split my 'hybrid' set-up to accommodate a separate 2-channel stereo room.

I already had a Cyrus CD 8 SE CD Player and a Cyrus PSX-R out-board power supply.

I then purchased a pair of B&W 685 loudspeakers and their B&W matching loudspeaker stands - the FS700.

I must admit that the sound quality is fantastic, even though it is 'mis-matched'; when I say this, I mean that my CD Player is way too good for the rest of the system.

Rotel electronics typically work very well along with B&W loudspeakers, so I would recommend B&W loudspeakers.

If in a larger room, the floor-standing B&W 684 loudspeakers should the job very well.

CD Player wise, I would suggest something like a Marantz CD6002 or the upcoming '6003.

Dan.

Thanks Dan! That's fast response!

Assuming I will be getting Marantz CD6003 (6002 is quite old..ah!), and B&W 684 (or 683), what cable connection would you be recommending? Thanks!

Do you think Cyrus CD 6 SE Player will make significant different to the whole system over Marantz Player?

Thanks again!

All i can say is ive owned a Rotel amp (RA931) with B&W speakers (i still use the same speakers in my current setup) and they work very well together with Rotel. As for a compatible cd player, the Cyrus will offer more than the Marantz imho. But they are different sounding cd players really. It depends what your sound preferences are. Many things to consider my friend !

Simon,

I would recommend speaker cables and RCA analogue interconnects from The Chord Company.

At this level, I would suggest The Chord Carnival Silverscreen speaker cables with The Chord Company Crimson RCA analogue interconnects.

The Cyrus CD 6 SE CD Player will offer a lot more, mostly in regards to detail retrieval, but the Cyrus does cost about 3 times more, so it really ought to!

I would recommend to go for more balance, in regards to the level of your equipment. As fantastic as the Cyrus CD Player is, I would suggest keeping your gear to roughly the same value throughout.

Dan.

Hi Dan,

Last night, I just bought the B&W CM7 (about 1200 pounds) after comparing with the 684 (1000 pounds) and 683 (725 pounds). And it comes bundled with AudioQuest Type 4 ER UniB/S cable. As for CD Player, I have ordered the NAD 545 BEE (no stock available till end month) as it is selling slightly less than 300 pounds here in Singapore and I thought it is a good buy. Do you think The Chord Company Crimson RCA analogue interconnects will works well with NAD player and Rotel Amp?

Thanks,

Simon.

The Chord Company Crimson RCA analogue interconnect will suit them fine, Simon. I have them for the surround channels (pre-outs) of my multi-channel surround sound system.

I used to own the higher-model The Chord Company Cobra 3 RCA analogue interconnects, and they were a step-up in terms of performance, so if your budget will stretch, perhaps you might like to check out the Cobra 3's.

Hi

I know from personal experience that Arcam match very well with Rotel. May I suggest that if new is over your budget, then have a look at ex-dem or even used. There is some basement bargains out their (DIVA & Alpha ranges).

Speakers are slightly tricky, due to the fact I don't know the availability in Singapore. But the obvious choice is B&W, also look at Monitor Audio BR2 or Tannoy.

Good luck.

Hi Dan,

I tried the following CD players this afternoon:
1) NAD CD545BEE (around 265 pound)
2) Rega Apollo (around 590 pound)
3) Cyrus CD 6se (around 820 pound)
4) Musical Fidelity A1 CD Pro ( around 1430 pounds)

Musical F was really good! but I must say it is beyond my budget; Both Rega and Cyrus becomes my obvious choices as NAD just can't match up to the transparency of this 2 players. I end up buying the cyrus since I have not learn much about Rega. The demonstrator introduced me The Chord Company Cobra 3 RCA analogue interconnects (as you have advised), so I bought 2 for both my Pre and Power amp.

Finally, I have a complete set of HiFi system....looking forward to try out this coming Saturday!
Thanks again for the advise!
