I was looking for a smaller replacement for the ancient Sharp micro system that I have had since I was a small child, and I am impressed by the Arcam Solo Mini and rDock, although not the Muso speakers that come with it as a package, so could anyone suggest me a couple of suitable speakers, preferably standmounters, for a budget of around £500-£750?

Monitor Audio RS1, B&W 685, Wharfedale Diamond 10 or even the old 9.1's. The latter should able to pick-up at a discount price. Also look at Mordaunt Short Mezzo 2's or 6's.

Rega RS1 (£390 per pair) without any doubt.

At 90db 8ohm they are plenty 'efficient' enough to make the most of the Solo-Mini's power.

Group test winners in another UK hifi magazine (HFC) a few months ago. (Not allowed to link the review. Sorry.)

I have heard Rega RS1's with an Arcam Solo-Mini (my old one) and even a Nait XS amplifier so I can vouch they will not need to be upgraded if you ever upgrade from the Solo-Mini.

Unfussy about positioning (even near walls) despite rear port.

EB Acoustics EB1 for 470 quid.
PMC DB1i for £770.
Rega RS1 for £390.

The Rega will probably be the lightest in bass but all of their speakers have been superb value for money. They'll go the loudest with high sensitivity.

Just a couple of thoughts...

Rega RS1,s M/A RS1's as well but wouldnt go for the B&W 685s.

Absolutely brilliant speakers but the Solo Mini wont drive them anywhere near as well as they'd like

I auditioned a Solo Mini with a pair of Dynaudio Audience speakers, they were a pretty impressive together.

Try the Proac Tablette Reference 8, the PMC DB1i, the Bower & Wilkins CM1, Dynaudio DM2/7, KEF XQ10, and the Tannoy Revolution DC4 Signatures. There should be one in that lot you'll love

For close wall proximity, the XQ10's and DC4's would be advantageous.

DB1i fabulous obviously, but is now up to £825 I think, which might be pushing budget a bit. Always worth hearing the AVI Neutron V for 400 notes, but sensitivity may be a bit on the low side for the Solo.

Thank you to everyone for your advice, my Arcam turned up the other day, and I found somewhere to try both the Regas and the Tannoys, which were the most promising looking on the list. I was impressed with both, although I went for the Tannoys.

Having got them now, they sound brilliant with my Arcam, it seems like they were made for each other.

Which Tannoy's?

Just to add to the already rich list, if you wait for a month or so, MA's newly announced RX1 standmounts for £400 or even bigger RX2 standmounts for £500 should be on your audition list. No-one has heard them yet (except WHF maybe) but should be better than RS1s for not that much more money.

EDIT: didn't notice OP already went for Tannoys...
