Streamer or MDAC + AE

With the recent 'Steamer league' in mind....

Which streamer would offer comparable sound quality to the Airport Express feeding an MDAC via optical?

Is there a streamer anywhere near this in terms of sound quality at a similar price (circa £700 in total) or am I missing something that a streamer provides in addition.

Squeezebox Touch would be a far superior transport. Squeezebox Transporter 2nd hand would be more than equal at the £600 to £700 price point.
