Spotify is causing dust to settle on my CD collection!

Sitting here listening to spotify and just realised I have not put a CD in my CD player for at least two weeks. I think my music listening habits have shifted somewhat! now all I need to do is convince the wife of the virtues of PC/HDD based music.....

Dust is setteling on my collection too and has done so ever since spotify enabled higher bitrates. Ive bought some cd's after that, but its less hassle to just turn on spotify and have everything there than finding cd's. The latest spotify version that imports stored music from my library will prolly make my cd player die of of boredom.

160 kbps for Spotify Free, and 320 kbps for Spotify Premium...

Spotify does the opposite for me...Despite using the service a lot, my CD collection is growing more rapidly than ever!

the bit rates are 320, I struggle to hear a difference when I compare CD to spotify.
I think the new version will do the same for me (if it ever gets updated!) but my wife does love the little spinning disk so I think we will probably have a CD player for a while yet.

Since my laptop is not the most technologically advanced, I still have to use USB as the most convenient and decent quality link to my hi-fi. Therefore, though the music is pretty darn decent, I think I will be sticking with CD-player a while longer. Besides, there's still an awful lot on CD you can't get from Spotify yet. Can't be bothered to do the transfer from CD to HDD and such...yet.

i have now been with spotify 8 months and also find
that my cd player is not being used as much if at all,
i find streaming spotify music is now much easier than finding cds or lps
and also struggle to find any differances in sound quality between the
cd and spotify, and spotify gives
me a collection of music to listen to i never would have bought but can now use at my leisure,
a absolute must site for all music lovers i also prefer the premium service for the higher bit rate .

How does this work then?

I presume you have to upload your uncompressed files and they compress them to the relative file size for the users to use?

If not how is it regulated?

AFAIK you don't upload anything to Spotify (do you?), I thought it was simply a streaming service, like Napster (the legal version I mean).

If not how is it regulated? No uploading of your own music involved, that would be file sharing and illegal!

With a free account, you stream content from from their catalogue of music stored on their servers, with a Premium account you have a choice of either streaming or downloading the content and storing locally on your HDD for playing back offline.

Okay so they do all the work and you don't have to pay, unless you want to go Premium.

That sounds reasonable.

the adverts are not very frequent every 7-9 songs when I was using the free version. On premium you also get the iphone app which you can store content offline which is great!!

Ohhh yesss....

The combination of Jools Holland to stir interest and Spotify/iPhone for listening in the car is just wonderful and has opened my ears to far more varied music than I ever would have discovered / listened to before.

Currently playing: Vocabularies by Bobby McFerrin. Previously played: I Speak Because I can by Laura Marling. Current Fave: Le Pop by Katzenjammer.

I do find that whilst I'm spending the same amount on music, they all tend to be "keepers" these days, rather than the "destined for cardboard box in loft" that a lot seemed to be before.

I saw him do a piece on Later... last Tuesday, it was interesting but is the whole album like that? I think I might get a bit bored of it after a while.

Current Fave: Le Pop by Katzenjammer.

What sort of thing is that?

Yes I've got quite a few of those myself...

oh yes the impulse buy errors happen much less frequently now!

We use spotify free but find i soon run out of my 2 gig download, and it slows down and wont play. We live at least 3miles from our exchange and only get a speed of 572kbps at the best of times. Our provider is Plusnet and we pay £10.00 pcm, any idea's for better speeds and more gig for not much more money? Who do you use and what speeds/gigs for downloading.

£10 a month that must be an old tariff. We pay around £11.50 and get 60gb which i don't use and up to 20 meg maybe you could change your tariff as Plusnet are reasonably priced.

McFerrin - not really, mixes Choral (think Adiemus but with multiple voices rather than multi-tracking) with African rhythms along with his uniqueness. Well worth a listen.

Katzenjammer - Norweigan female quartet who mix celtic/russian/rock/ballads and play pretty much any instrument they can. Totally out there in places, but love it.

I too would convert if only it was Sonos compatible!!!!

come on guys sort it out.

I'm a big fan of Napster though. Shame about the bitrate.

P

dust has settle on mine too since i play spotyfi free acount into my CA dacmagic. i dont find the higher bit rate any better sound so if the ads dont bother you dont pay for premium
