Just recently purchased a pair of Spendor A6 speakers.

Don,t know if this is a problem or not but when i turn the volume up by more than a quarter power the sound gets a bit muddy, especially if its a good solo recording by someone like Martin Taylor.

My system is

SUGDEN BIJOU= CD, PRE-AMP, 34WATT CLASS A/B POWER AMP

STRATOS 3 INTERCONNECTS

ATLAS HYPER 3 SPEAKER CABLES

Anyone got any ideas please

Did this happen when you auditioned them? 34W strikes me as a little low for those but I can't say I've tried such power on them. Try toeing them in more if they're not already pointing at you.

As good as the little Sugden is, I suspect that the 86dB sensitivity of the A6's is just a bit too much for it when you want more. If you're not willing to change the system, it will be worth checking out speakers with a higher sensitivity - preferably 90dB, which should be more than twice as loud as the Spendors.

I'm not familiar with your interconnects, but it should be fairly easy to borrow some from your local dealer to try out and either eliminate them or narrow it down to them.

Thanks David, only played the speakers for about 20 hours, so probably need a good running in. As i said, it doesn,t happen with the majority of music i listen to ( mainly jazz ) but when the track has a fair amount of archtop guitar bass then i do notice it, ( play jazz guitar myself ). Although i must admit that anything above a quarter volume is VERY loud, so i would never listen at that level, other than that i am very happy with the quality of sound.

Took all of my kit along when auditioning, auditioned 5 pairs of speakers in the 2-3000 grand range, even drove B&W 804s, the spendors sounded best no problems but did not take the offending cds at the time. The only part i didn,t audition was the speaker cable which was recommended and purchased at the time.

I think the whole system needs a good run in cable, speakers etc, as i said to david have only listened for about 20 hours.

Hi all, have run in the system now and it sounds fantastic.

Thanks for all your advice
