speakers on sideboard

Budget: 500 pounds or 1,000 pounds for active speakers

Dynaudio MC15 actives. They even have little desktop stands.

Otherwise - as David hinted at above - there is a 'round-up' review of a group of active and powered speakers in the latest (June) issue of What Hifi. (Page 46 - 51) where there are a number of suitable options that fall within your budget for active speakers.

But I convinced my wife to get floorstanders 🙂
