I'm looking to change/upgrade my 10 year old pair of Proac Signature 2000's. I am using a Croft Phono Inegrated amp rated at around 45 watts. Does anyone here have any recommendations? Any speaker brands that work well with the Croft? Was thinking maybe Spendor A6 or 3/1R2's.

Harbeth is supposed to be a superb match for Croft amplification... If you take a look on the Harbeth user forum you will read many posts of people praising the combo.

Thanks Mac,

I never had the chance to hear Harbeth speakers before. Heard great things about the new 30.1 but a little out of my price range. The P3ESR looks a little too small. Maybe the 7ES-3's. Although I never heard a metal dome tweeter that I ever really liked.

No problem.

Don't be fooled by the metal domed tweeter... the SHL5 has a super tweeter and let me assure you it does not relay a hint of harshness... just superb detail.

I

If you can, try and get a demo.

Keep us updated.

Right, Stirling would be a brand to look into. They have two nice models. What do you think about Spendor?

Spendors good... not too disimillar too the Harbeth sound, not quite as all round good though.... well worth a home demo if possible.

I've always thought of Spendor as Harbeths poorer cousin. They approach the sound in a similar way but Spendor just don't have quite the emotion of Harbeth. What I'd call musical in H I find is slightly lacking focus in S.

I'm speaking generally of course.

I have heard most of Spendor's Classical line of speakers over the years and always liked them. I have never heard the S or the newer A series before, for the exception of the SA standmount model. The sound is really easy on the ear and does most of the Hi-Fi basics right whle always giving something extra that many speakers lack. Maybe it's called "Realisim" or "Musical Involvment"? So I am wondering how the A6 or A5's stack up against their Classical line? Oddly, the only dealer near me carries only their Classical line.

I wish I could finally hear some Harbeths, but no dealer even close to where I live. To be honest I am not sure If I would prefer the Harbeth sound to the Spendor one. From everything that I have read Harbeth seems to sound a little more everything over Spendor speakers. More vivid, more definition ect.

One thing I like about the Spendors is their easy going and relaxed nature. I don't really care about hyped up definition or hearing every last detail. I just want a nice musical experiance that I can enjoy for hours. I have never heard a metal dome tweeter that I prefered over a soft dome one. I'm having a hard time imagining that Harbeth escaped all of those metal dome nasties.

I can't afford the new Harbeth 30.1 and thier P3ESR and 7-ES3 models both use metal domes.

Even though I have not heard them, at this point I am leaning towards the Spendor A6's.

Anyone ever hear the Neat Petite SX or Elite SX models? How do they compare to Spendor?

Thanks Everyone

Hi again,

I understand your reservation of speakers with metal dome tweeters and I would be the first to shy away from the likes of MA, but let me assure you the SHL5 and P3 are in no way like that.

The Harbeth just has the right balance of warmth and detail

and certainly with the SHL5 no little base.

However, at the end of the day if you are unable to demo any piece of equipment before purchase

it's always a risk and I can appreciate

your

concerns.

omnibeard,

Thanks for the suggestion. I have never heard of this brand Monopulse before today so I went to thier website to check them out. While I have no doubt that these speakers might sound just spectacular, I have to be honest here, they are some of the ugliest looking speakers I have ever seen. Sorry. :O
