I'm no expert at this - just looking to get my first system shortly - the thing that made me decide to get one was hearing the Marantz PM6003 & CD6003 through a pair of Monitor Short Mezzo 2's - brilliant sound. I haven't heard the others so can't comment. The Wharfedale 10.1's are highly recommended but they just appeared a bit 'too budget looking' to me - this isn't a comment on their quality, I just felt that spending that sort of money I'd rather have something that looks a bit better.

yes i heard the mezzos with the marantz and thought them pretty good too

Just my 10 worth: i don't really know the Marantz PM-6003 sound but I have heard other models and they seem quite punchy (a bit like a Rotel). it depends on the type of sound/music you like but i think any of your choices are going to be an upgrade from your Technics'. I have the Focal 706Vs and they have a very sweet treble but lack deep bass. I tried the Wharfedale's and they were ok but remember their Whathifi award status is based partly on their price (Focals blew them away for sound).

For me Marantz amps work best with B&W speakers. Try looking for a new (or second hand Pair) of B&W 602 s3, you should be able to get a pair cheap. I had a pair for my system when i had the Marantz 7200 amp (a very good amp What hifi award, with an Arcam cd73 t cd player and boy it could rock, party could do about anything then switch on the class A button and boy it was like 1000 plus amp (7200 was only 350 pounds). I then brought the Nad 352ct amp (What hi fi award winner) and boy it could punch these speakers and keep a grip on them. I sold the above ( moved and not had the room i was gutted) I now have.... wait for it a Denon dm-37 with the Tannoys F1 customs (it goes to show how these all in ones have put the game up a bit in sound). But like above B&W speakers i found work best with Marantz amps.

Whats your source (CDP/iPod/Laptop etc...). Also, what speaker cable/interconnects are you using?

It would also be handy to know what kind of music you generally listen to and also have you budgeted for speaker stands etc...

IMO the M/A BR2's would be a good bet as would the Wharfedale 10.1's

What is your overall budget?

Marantz used to be very good with Mission speakers, but of late, and hearing that the 6003 might be on the brighter side, I'd look to partner them with something like the Q Acoustics 1030i or the superb 1050i floorstander.

Jan Edition of What Hifi p49. Marantz PM6003 with CD6003. Recommended speaker:

Dali Lektor 2

or

Arcaydis DM1s

Go with the lektor 2 speakers, they will match very well. The BR2's would sound a bit bass boomy, if you do not have the space behind them.
