Hi, which speakers of these would you recommend for classical? Sound has to be smooth, cohesive, dynamic, balanced and without any harshness. All of this as much as it can be combined at this price level.

MS Mezzo 2, B&W 685, MA Br2, Wharfedale 9.1/9.2, Focal 706V, Kef IQ30, Triangle Titus Ex, JBL ES30.

Amp will be HK 980, CDP HD 990, room is 13m square.

Hi alf81.
My dad runs with a set of kef concerto 1.
His musical tates are approx 60/70% classical/ opera and he swears by them.
Great speakers with a lovely open sound.
There's been a few posts on here about them.
Think they retailed about £500 back in 2000/2001.

I would add the avi neuttron v to that list I find them great for clasical (although I do not listen to classsical all the time). I found them much more detailed and the seperation of instruments much clearer than others I heard at the price point.

Thanks for replies, AVI Neutron seems interesting but they aren't available in my country, and Kef floorstander isn't an option as I don't have room for a floorstander. Thanks anyway.

Hey alf, good amp and CDP you have there - where are you based if not the UK or US then? If you're looking for a compact speaker, you could do worse than check out the Q Acoustics 2020, from their new range, KEF's IQ30 which enjoys a lot of positive feedback, if you can find a pair of Mission 751s, which will be a used buy, then you'd be doing well; they'll liven up the slightly softer presentation of the HK kit. EB Acoutics Eb1 and the Arcaydis DM1s round off my suggestions, they're current flavours of the month, but with good reason it seems.

Something for most budgets before getting onto the likes of Quadral's Pico or Leema's Xero speakers.

Got to admit, the s3e's spendor do sound great with clasical, but I am biassed. Maybe some of the older bbc range may be cheaper and better.

My cousin has just bought the Maranzt amp and CDP (6003's) and he's got the Arcaydis DM1 speakers currently.

They sound very good indeed sitting on some Atacama Aurora stands along with QED Silver Anniversary speaker cable and an Atlas Equator interconnect.

He listens to a lot of radio and classical music and the soundstage is sublime. I was amazed at the depth of bass these speakers achive!

He has got a 30day money back clause on the speakers so he's giving them a good 3 weeks before he makes his choice; next up are the EB Acoustic EB1's if he has to change which IMO, he wont!

Rogers LS4a

Sold them to my mother in law and they still sound great 20 years after they were made!

Add Acoustic Energy AE 1 to that list, plenty of Ex demo around.

They use to say older Dalis were very good with Classical stuff, although I've not personally heard them.

I'd take out of the equasion the es30, the br2 and the 685.the 9.1 would be to polite with the HK.Guess the IQ30 would sound just as perfect.the HK puts out good bass for these and the treble on the iq30 is smooth and would compensate the politeness of the hk.

Thaiman. Where have you seen Ex-Demo. I'm interested in purchasing.

Audiolincs... I am sure they have a pair. Otherwise ring Peter Tyson or Audio Affair and ask them they should be able to supply you a ex dem pair. I shall try to remember where else in the mean time. expect to pay around £600ish though as these will be a re-released classic version.

The original AE1 have a lot of problem with form surrounding therefore you can pick them up, 2nd hand for less than £250.

The MK2 should still be good condition and more sort after too, the average price of a excellent condition 2nd hand would be £450.
