Im looking for suggestions/advice on what to upgrade my current TDL 1's to as they sound a little lacking in the bottom end and harsh at the high end. My amp is an Audiolab 8000a room size about 3 x 4 metres with a high ceiling

I have about 200-300 and have researched the following :

Mission 773Es
Warfdale Diamond 10.1
Rega rs1
Monitor Audio Silver 9i
Ruark Talisman II
Mission 753
Tannoy Mercury F4
Tannoy R2

I use monitor audios with my audiolabs and they work great. I am on the gold series though.

You may wanna try looking for some second hand MA's sometimes ebay can give quite the bargain

What kind of music do you listen to generally and what cabling (interconnects & speaker cable) do you use?

Other speakers to consider would be:

Monitor Audio BR2's
Monitor Audio RS1's
B&W 602 S2's
B&W 602 S3's

Don't forget to budget for decent speaker stands if you're going for standmounmt speakers. Soundstyle Z2's or Atacama Nexus 5/6's at a minimum IMO

Hi john, are the 773e speakers made in china?, I,ve got original 771 bookshelves and 773 floorstanders and i think they were made in france, had them for about 16 years now and they still sound amazing

The only think that worries me about MA's is they tend to be a bit flat in the low ends and strong at the high end (from what ive heard) which might clash with the sound my amps producing

mostly stuff produced over the last 5 years ranging from electronica to indie

... on a related note how do you think some of these old speakers would hold up to a modern pair liek the diamonds or say q acoustic

The Monitor Audio BR2's would suit your taste in music very well; more so than the RS1's although still very good. Good bass depth with good, detailed midrange and smooth but crisp treble.

The Audiolab amp is a belter and will drive the speakers well.

What is your source though (i.e. CDP, MP3/Lossless via DAC etc...)?

The B&W speakers mentioned will work very well too.

I listen to a lot of electronica stuff like Fischerspooner, Layo & Bushwacka, Daft Punk, Leftfield, Massive Attack etc and the above speakers work very well with this music.

Have you thought about speakers from Dynaudio?

They generally have oustanding Bass for their cabinet size coupled with a smooth top end and plenty of Kick, ideal for your musical tastes I would have thought.

300 notes should get you a very good second hand pair of Audience 52s for example, as a minimum.

Hi

I think there is a bit of a theme developing here. When I bought my Audiolab 8000A back in 1994 I also got Monitor Audio speakers (Studio 14s - which I have never seen anywhere else since) They work brilliantly with the amp. A reasonable close second place was a Dali speaker (I can't remember which one) but maybe worth adding them to your shortlist.

From other peoples comments it seems that the MAs and the Audiolab go well together.

From that list, I'd look at the Talisman II's if you want something lively, or the Tannoy R2's if you prefer something more laid back. Those would be my two favourites.

If i remember rightly MA speakers are what Audiolab used to pair there amps with at various shows (probably why the 2 have been considered a perfect match) not what older models though.

in terms of Dynaudio can you get these for around the £200 - 300 mark i thought these weighed in at £400+
