Only done the AV side of things in the last 2 years but the latest house development is for dining listening and solitude listening.Having no experience in this new development some basic advice would be appreciated.

The dining room is extending into a new part which is mainly glass looking onto the garden.Thinking of bookshelf speakers, either on stands or swivel wall mount in the central dividing section and which alternate between facing into a solid wall room or a mainly glass room.Floor will be wooden throughout.(NO floorstanders)

Forgetting budget(to some extent),and auditioning for myself,(cos its not finished yet and some decisions have to be made now)etc ,

a/ given that there are only about 8 m cable involved and once it is in ,it is in (despite trunking etc) ,safest bet cable suggestion.

b/ type of speaker to best suit these acoustics (if anything the balance of listening is towards the glass side)

c/ any experience of problems with 15 m runs of RJ11 cable to take my router into this room away from the phone point since I want to put a NAS in there. (as well as a switch for all wired points)

As additional info I am very tempted by the Uniti/Qute as a single box unit because I want to keep this as compact as poss, but will consider amp/cd combo if funds will not stretch to the Naim(or I do not like them)

Your input is appreciated, members of the forum.(and any further questions)

I'm just putting a similar system together for my renovated living room/dining room.

In the living room area I've got a pair of PMC Wafer2 speakers fixed fairly high up on the wall either side of the chimney breast. They are the only speakers that could go into this position and be "focused" into the iving space (that I could find anyway).

In the dining area I've got a couple of B&W CCM818's let into the ceiling above the dining table. They are more for background music at dinner parties etc.

I have just bought my NaimUniti that will eventually be the source for these, fed through a simple speaker switch. I'm loving the Uniti, so very easy to set up and get running with streaming and everything else and has a brilliant, revealing and involving sound, I've had to put my iPod away until I can rerecord all my stuff lossless. I'm currently using it with a pair of Neat Motive 3's in my work apartment in the Netherlands, it will go into my house when the refurbishment is finished (plasterers in now so not too long).

I used some QED reveltion cable, which my dealer was kind enough to let me have on a drum, and only charge me for what I used.

Unfortunately I can't tell you what it will sound like - no one does demos of these kind of speakers - and it's not finished yet. I did as much research as I could and this was about the best answer I could come up with.

Sorry to not be able to give any more useful info.

I've also put in a router/switch in my airing cupboard upstairs and have run ethernet (Cat5) cable from there to the Uniti and also down to the dedicated listening room in the cellar - the best advice I have is that the cable runs will really not be an issue, the longest run is just short of 20m. I don't know how RJ11 compares, but I guess pretty similar.

Again though, I've yet to fire everything up, so this is not based on experience, more on the research that I've done.

i think with all that glass you are going to have a very lively room accoustic wise, you will almost certainly have to experiment with your speaker positioning to obtain the best sound, you may find that you have a lot of reflected sound and will need to furnish accordingly.

Thanks for the feedback so far- I could do with some more on the cable and RJ11 questions though.

The first result is I have approval for the speaker stands.Atacama Aurora 6. Fits the bill technically and aesthetically.

Sorry Davey, if I see cable theads I tend to ignore them!

In a reflective room like that, I'd go with a smoother sounding speaker. Try Spendor's S3/5r, or maybe even the Monitor Audio RX1 or Rega's RS1.

I'd get a copper only cable, as you don't want to be exaggerating any high frequencies. Either QED's Original or Chord's Carnival Silver Screen should be fine.

I can't help you with RJ11 cables or router/NAS stuff, sorry.

If you can't stretch to the UnitiQute, you c0uld always look at a Sonos ZP120 with a CR200 remote - tiny. All you need - Napster, Last FM, Deezer, access to your NAS and internet radio stations, with a spare input if you want to add an iPod dock too.

Anything else?
