i have currently got a rega set up with monitor audio rx6 speakers and im using a rel sub all as listed in my signiture, i love the sound of the regas but i feel i may not be getting the best from them with my current set up, i am toying with the idea of selling the speakers and sub which is not really being used and using the money to upgrade the speakers, would anyone agree with this or should i be upgrading/changing a different aspect of my system.

if the speakers are the weak link does anyone have any recommendations as to what i should be listening to?

if i sell the sub and speakers plus add a bit more i could stretch to around £1500 for new speakers.

i look forward to your thoughts

What is it you're not happy with about the sound? The fact you have a Rel sub with the RX6's (even if you're not using it much) suggests you like a big bassy sound and would need fairly large speakers... So what sort of size room are you in? The Rega gear is very nice but the Mira might be a little on the weak side if you're looking to use £1500 speakers - it would certainly power most, but overall grip and control might be lacking. You may do better to upgrade the amp first in that case... There are many variables!

i like the sound but i feel the sub is fairly redundant as its turned down so low to integrate with the speakers and i thought it would make more sense to do away with the sub & speakers and just upgrade the speakers, i do see your point on the amp but it goes so well with the apollo it would have to be a special amp for me to upgrade in that area, although i would like tone controls.

Sounds to me like it's doing exactly what it should in such a system

Well you have many options for speakers but floorstanders would seem to be your thing, Rega's in my memory have a fairly tight, rhythmic and musical "analogue" sound. I'm not sure what your musical tastes are but something a little more refined and speedy might be an improvement - many think they need more bass if they find it lacking when they may just need "better" bass. I'd reckon you could try PMC GB1's, Proac Stucio 140's or maybe Ruark Talisman 3's at the level you're looking at, I won't recommend any of my company's products as I'll only be moderated!

I think you should try your system at a local friendly dealer and experiment a little, any dealer worth their salt would book the time for you to do this - it's not entirely practical but is worth it in the long run. See if you can take your system in, or if they stock the same components use theirs - have a good 15-20 minutes listening to a few familiar tracks on it to adjust (remember when listening that even things such as driving to the dealer will affect your hearing and take time to settle down - it's worth having a quiet chat for a while in the store first! - seems crazy but it's the same principal as going to a club/gig and having your ears ringing for many hours after, just on a lesser scale). Try a few different amps with your Monitor Audio's to see what effect it has and then a few different speakers with your Rega amp to see which has the most effect and where you should concentrate on an upgrade first!

thanks david, i will be going down that route at some point soon, i should have got the saturn when i first demo'd the 2 but money was a bit tight then.

if you had a choice of speaker up to £1500 what would be your thoughts?

I left my system on overnight and it sounds so much better now, the treble and mids are amazing and the bass seems to of tightened up and feels punchier and just better all round. so i'm taking your advise andrew and sticking to what i have speaker wise.

i have just treated myself and bought the saturn though
