Budget - £600 would be an uncomfortable stretch. £400 would probably be much more sensible.

Main source Roksan Kandy Mk3

Amp - probably the Kandy - it hasn't been finalised.

Problem - due to room size shape an furniture theres only one place the speakes can go.

In alcoves 1mtr wide, approx 50cm deep on, 1 on each side of the chimney breast. About 6 - 7 feet apart. Close to three walls!

Additionally speakers have to be mounted above head height at about 900mm. (to get above armchairs)

Smallish speakers are preferred. Decor <sigh>

Walloping Bass not important - ruins more than it helps in small rooms IMO.

Taste: Small group Jazz / Accoustic - some classical and operatic. Currently Enjoying a small pair of Tannoy Custom F1

Poised and responsive while still a relaxing listen.

Over to you people.

B & W 385's. May be a bit bright with both Roksan components. MA RS1's would be an alternative.

B&W 685 here too, but check out the ProAc Tablettes...

AVI Neutron III or IV - wonderful detail, a nice insight into the music, not bass heavy, but what it has is effective. Small enough to easily position and you should be able to find the IVs on a deal and both models on the used market too.

Hughes123:letsavit:Spender ex demo

Be a little more specific, please.
S3/5, S3/5se (sealed enclosure) or S3. Easy to place, a good match for the Kandy gear, natural sounding and excellent.

JD reckons the new AVI Neutrons aren't massively dissimilar to the Spendor SA1s so they would be worth a shout.

Steady guys, the prefects have just left the common room!

yea S3, i have them in alcoves, they dont seem to mind where you put them.

That gives me a few options. Unfortunately the Rega R1s are only available to Demo locally from a shop I will no longer deal with. The Spendors are interesting but a bit of a budget stretch. The MA RS1 seem like the place to start. I'm also interested in Castle Richmonds if anyone has experience? Stirling Audio also make an LS3/5A placeholder ?

Thanks for the suggestions, appreciated.

ProAc Tablette Reference 8 Signatures are truly wonderful speakers, as are AVI Neutron IV, although the latter only have single terminals and I biamp, if I didn't I would have bought them in a flash.

Watch the MA RS1s, I got rid of them because if their boominess. I had them about 30cms from the rear wall (and corner) and they just boomed. I would avoid if I were you.

Just a thought - you might try to satellites and a well integrated subwoofer. That way you would have a much better chance of controlling sub 100 Hz room modes.

A good example (blush) is the Arcam Muso plus Logo sub which was absolutely designed for music rather than home cinema. It's not too far from your maximum budget though you could even start with the satellites and add a sub later.....there are wall brackets available too.

John Dawson (Arcam)

Thanks - thats useful to know.

You would do best to go for an audition at a dealer and ask him to stick them in the corners

Well I had a look at and listen to the B & W 685 today sound was OK, better than the much cheaper Tannoy Mercury F1 but I'd expected something more profound at this premium. ÿMore detailed but maybe a little tinny sounding on Piano. Bright but not tiring, I wouldn't think, although you'd have to try a more extended listen. ÿ

So much for the sound. That tacky vinyl wood effect is a big turn-off. ÿFugly...

How about some used Canton Ergo RC-K's, with room compensation module? The module can cancel out any unwanted room effects, such as boomy bass.
