My Onkyo 876 is getting moved out to what will become the projection room leaving me with a need for a new receiver for the lounge. The lounge currently has a set of Q-AV speakers (7.1). Budget for the new amp is resticted to around £400 as I have already spent too much on the projection room. I've narrowed the choice down to the two above amps. I'm aware of the differences in terms of number of HDMI inputs etc. However would welcome views on which sounds the best. Amp will be used largely /for films with some music from Soundbridge/Itunes combo.

think i've answered my own question. Forgot that the yamaha was theWHF best buy under £400 (i really should keep hold of those old issues). I now need to convince myself that I really don't need more than two hdmi inputs...

If anyone diagrees with the review of the yamaha and thinks the sony sounds better then interested to hear from you

as that is my budget for my main amp and i am playing music through it as well i tried to test both them but only tested the 763 yamaha which was good i like the denon 1909 as well but that may be a little pricer. the sony is always out of stock where every i go but the yamaha sounded good i need more than 2 hdmi inputs thats why i could not consider it.

more for partner keep things easy

i have a lg42 inch lcd with only 2 hdmi's and i have skyhd , xbox360 plus in the few months i will own a blu ray so i was going to use 3 hdmi's as inputs then 1 up to the tv and keep the tv on hdmi1 and show the partner how to change the input on the amp which see will use for the cd player as well

.

Is there a better way

I'm trying to discount the HDMI thing as I don't use more than 2 on my onkyo and I'm struggling to think what I would need a 3rd one for (in the process of upgrading to Sky HD but don't actually need that to go into the AMP via HDMI, use a Harmony 1 remote so its not as if switching activities etc. is taxing).

I wouldnt be so quick to rule out the sony...In this months WHF issue bout the Sony...

"One of the most complete performers in its class, this muscular surround recieveris an energetic and entertaining listen with both movies and music"

plus..."Incredible value - The STR-DA2400ES has been carefully tweaked by Sony's top engineers:it might be fairly cheap, but its actually something of a sonic hot-rod, and probably ought to cost more than it does."

I am probably going with the sony. Two reasons:

- easier to get hold of (though not easy)

- resale. I really don't need 4 HDMIs and suspect I never will in the time that I will own this amp and where I am going to use it. However I suspect that when I come to flog it in a few years time that Yamaha will have devalued more because it has less HDMIs and everyone wants lots of HDMIs regardless of whether they use them or not.

Are you going for the 2400 in black and if so, how much have you seen it for? I'd love to buy this at the sub £400 prices I've seen for the silver, but no-one has it in black.

It's bloomin' infuriating to read such good reviews when you can't actually get your hands on one.

no going for silver. Really not bothered about the colour. It's either going in a closed cabinet or will be in a seperate room, even regardless of that I absolutely refuse to pay a price premium on a bit of AV kit based on colour.

You may be aware of this already but the 2400ES is £349.99 at Play.Com (in Silver) and in stock. What speakers are you going to put with it?

Yep gone with the deal from play. It will go with a Q-AV 7.1 setup I have. Not ideal but the there is limited scope in the lounge for anything different. Fortunately I'm going to start converting the garage soon to house my projector
