Hi,

i have had my name down for the yamaha dsp-ax863 since december but have almost given up waiting. I am considering the new 3400 es, sony's latest mid range av receiver and wondered if anyone has purchased this unit yet and what the feedback is. ?

i went to the sony centre in tottenham ct road on sunday, they had a unit on display but i couldnt get a proper demo. Frustratingly, the only one in stock was the demo and they couldnt offer any guarantee of availability. what is going on with the Japanese?

regards

I don't think you can draw conclusions about a nation of over 127m based on the Sony Centre in Tottenham Court Road.

I wonder if it was the same Sony Centre mentioned in JGoodricke's post in this thread?

hi Andrew,

Yes, it was definately the same place.

My issue is the limited availability. i blame i 'what hifi' and the product of the year award for yamaha, but what is sony's excuse?

do you have any anticipated dates for a review of the 3400? i wouldnt feel comfortable making a purchase without a whathifi seal of approval !!

Well, there's a shop apparently not too keen to sell anything...

AFAIK we haven't yet received a 3400ES from Sony, though one was requested. That can be par for the course with the company, however...

I think I'm the only person on this forum that has the 3400es. I got it before Christmas and really rate it. My previous receiver was the 1200es and this blows it away. HD audio is wonderful. I've not heard the 863 but I did listen to the Denons 2808 and 2809 and the Sony was better. It's GUI is very easy to use and even in two channel direct, the sound is very good. Bluray though is amazing. I had my AV nut brother-in-law over for a demo a while back and he was amazed. I used Iron Man, Ratatouille, Ice Age 2 (Bluray) and Hero and Star Wars (Revenge of the Cyph) on dvd as reference.
