Hi all in the know

Im looking at taking the leep from 21" CRT tech to big and shiny tech world of LCD i've decided that 40" is the screen for me but which one..... the W4500 tv of the year clearly the first name on the team sheet but what about the others? First of all i'll say that the X series i dont like the surround so much but thats maybe just me so i've ruled that out. This leaves the W vs the Z 4500. The question i ask myself is "Do i need 200htz in my life?????" Is it a gadget of great whow factor that doesn't really make any diiference at all or "Do i need it in my life?". I truth i cant find a review of his tv other then its stats which could mean anything as im sure you all know and i would like some constructive advise whether the new z series is worth the extra £amount about £600 in the shops. Or to aim for the W4500 and a blueray for the same money?

Oh and 1080p upscaling from Sony DVDHDD drives any good or all talk.

Magic i await your guidence.

This is a question I have also asked without any reply, given the impact 100hz had when it arrived on Tv's 200hz should be outstanding but without some feed back who knows??

cheers mate i know, i'll keep searching and post if i find anything

IMO, the Sony 4500 should be good enough. Haven't seen any reviews on the Z series yet. Save the money and buy a good blu-ray player instead. Have you considered either the Pioneer or Panasonic plasmas? It is a matter of personal preference but I much prefer the picture on the plasmas any day.

We haven't had the 'Z' series Sonys in for review yet, and as ever getting test samples out of Sony can be a struggle. But that won't stop us trying! We're as intrigued as you are to find out how they perform.

Personally I would forget about a LCD on 40""+ screens especially seeing Sony has "issues" with back light bleed and clouding on some of its W4500 range and go in the direction of say the Panasonic TH42PZ80. Seeing as you are comming away from a CRT IMHO you will find any LCD to have overblown colours and over bright. SD proformance is also not as good as on the Panasoinc Plasma not to mention Black levels and motion handling.

I did look at the new Z range in my local sony centre. After adjusting everything to something approaching normal and playing bond it was certainly a decent picture if softer compared to the 'W' next to it (both 40 or 42", I can't remember and both adjusted similar). Perhaps this was as a result of the 200hz scan but I can't be sure. Sky SD was awful. As the 46" model was to close in price to the pioneer on top of my list I did'nt pursue it any further plus I thought that a 46" Panasonic available at discount elsewhere and at half the price had a better picture too.

I haven't seen the Z Series but I have seen the new X4500. IMO, there is really no comparison with the Pioneer 9G. The Pioneer simply has better and more realistic images versus the Sony X4500.

Saw the 40Z4500 in a local retailer over the weekend. Compared to the other sets, watching tennis on a SD signal, the Z gave a rock solid picture, especially on the white lines when panning. the other (mainly Sony) sets had a distinct fuzz at the line edges when panning across the court. This fuzzyness wasn't bad, but its one of those things that once you've seen, you will keep seeing. I agree that there is a big price differential, but if you watch a lot of sport of fast moving action films it could be worth it, (I'm about to order a 46Z4500 this week).

Re Plasmas, maybe its our local dealers, but I haven't been impressed with the colours overall, Black yes, buth the other colours don't seem as sharp, as I said, it could be our local dealers and their setups.
