I have a sky+ box with only one sat feed available. sometimes it will record a program automaticaly and other time it fails is there a way round this, thanks

The short answer is you need a second sat feed.

It probably only recorded coincidentaly as you left it tuned to the channel that was to be recorded. As stated by daveh75, you really do need a twin feed, so one tuner will be used for recording while you can watch another channel. Indeed, you can actually record two different channels and watch a program you have already recorded on the hard drive at the same time, with the recommended twin feeds installed.
