Hello all,

Haven't posted here for a while and need some help.

I have just got sky+ HD and was wondering, do I connect, (Onyko 605, pana 42 th42pz81b, mission M cubes, PS3)

an HDMI cable from sky HD to onkyo input 1, ps3 with an HDMI to input 2 on the amp, AND THEN

from onkyo out an HDMI cable to the input of the TV.

OR can I just get away with connecting the HDMI cable from the sky HD box straight to the TV and using an optical

out from the tv into the amp, ( with the ps3 connected to the input 1 of the amp with an HDMI cable from the amp out into the input 2 of the TV)

PHEW

Just wondering which was a better bet

Thanks a lot guys

Regardless of whether you route the video (+stereo audio) via the amp using HDMI, you need a separate digital audio connection to the amp to get Dolby Digital 5.1 from selected programmes and movies. Sky+HD only outputs stereo over HDMI.

damn well now I'm really confused so what I need an hdmi from then sky to the amp with ANOTHER cable from sky to amp just for audi!o??

this doesnt sound right

is the sky hdmi to tv and optical from tv to amp no good?

what about if I want sound from the tv through the amp? freesat or suchlike

I think my amp (605) only has one optical input ? 🙁

No, it has two. And some Sky+HD boxes have electrical digital as well as optical - the Onkyo has two of those inputs, too...

sorry , I just mean what cable I need,

I think I need ,

1) hdmi from sky to tv

2)sky optical to amp

3)hdmi from ps3 to amp

4) hdmi from amp to tv

It means some Sky HD boxes offer a choice of optical or electrical digital outputs, and you can use either.

And that the Onkyo has two optical digital inputs and two electrical digital inputs.

Yes, and if you want to run the Freesat sound from the TV to the Onkyo, another optical lead (if that's the kind of digital output the TV has) from TV to amp.

right, I see, and a standard toslink optical cable will fit these electrical digital inputs yes?

I can seem to remember seeing the connections at the back of the amp

brilliant Andrew, you a guru of gurus,

and yes my panasonic only has one sound output option

- a optical toslink out 🙁

at least I think it only has that one

No, the toslink only fits in the optical sockets. For the electrical digital connections you need a 75ohm digital cable, with phono plugs on each end, like this one.

And yes, the TH-42PZ81B has an optical output

RIGHT, I think I got it so I could use either optical or these electrical jobbers.

And I'm guessing the electrical ones are better than optical?

In this set-up there should be no discernible difference.

brilliant

I couldnt face buying more damn wires.

The day someone invents the wireless amp will be a fine day indeed

Urwire?

Is that this one...?
