SKY HD Audio Output HDMI vs Optical

I have just bought a Sony STRDG910 receiver and using it via HDMI with the PS3 it is very impressive. However using HDMI for the SKY HD is not so good. Depending on which channel I watch it seems to miss identify the audio type and I get some very weird decoding. I can change the audio manually but I really would like it to sort itself out automatically. It works fine using the optical. My questions are:

1) Am I doing something wrong?

2) Is it a "feature" of the Sky HD box?

or 3) A feature of the amp?

The reason for wanting HDMI is for lip-sync. I know I can adjust delays in the amp and the HD box but the delay seems to vary.

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

It's a feature of the Sky HD box, i'm afraid - unless you use the optical connection, you won't benefit from the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound.

And yes, lip-sync can sometimes be an issue on Sky HD - especially if you live pause things/use the FF/RW a lot. If it gets too irritating, I find stopping watching then returning to a recording via the planner seems to offer a quick and dirty reset of the sound.
