hi everybody i'm in a bit of a situation right now i can get the new samsung ue40b7020 led tv for £1199 and i can also get the new samsung le46b50 lcd tv for the same price my problem lies like this.Get the led and be happy with the better technology at expense of having a 40 inch screen or go for the lcd and and enjoy the benefits of a bigger screen but without the led tech. To make matters even worse i can also get the new samsung ps50b551 plasma at the same price as the to tvs mentioned. opinions and help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Personally I'm not a huge fan of LCD TVs. I prefer plasma. I have heard the many ISF calibrators rate Samsung plasmas very highly, some even rate them above Panasonic (widely regarded as the next best after Pioneer). They set up TVs for a living, so they ought to know a good one when they see it. I'd recommend that you have a look at the Panasonic range as well though. They make several 46-50" inch plasmas within your budget.

i have a panasonic th46pz8b , the lowest spec 1080p model of 2008 , and i only paid 950 euros for it , im very impressed with the picture , i think you should defo check out panasonic , however , take a look at the samsung 50a656 plasma too , they were going for £1000 in early feb , if you looked hard enough , there are no reviews of this in any uk based sites ( dont know why ) but i found a really indepth american review of that , against a pz85 panny , and the samsung won it , maybe the newer sammy plasma is better , i dont know , but its worth a look , its a gorgeous looking thing too .....

Hi,

I couldn't say which one has the best picture as I've never compared them side by side (except in Currys / Comet where you can almost guarantee that they won't be set up properly). A friend of mine has the Panasonic 46PZ85 and it's very nice. The main thing that stopped me from buying a Panasonic recently (I bought a Pioneer instead) was that you need to access the service menu to calibrate them properly. That means that you really need to bring in professional help to get the best from them. The user menus on all of the current Panasonics only offer very limited picture controls and none of the presets is anything close to the D65 standard for greyscale. This won't worry everyone though. The other thing is that I liked the clean and simple look of the Pioneer better than any of the current Panasonic models (although the soon to be released V10 looks very smart). Samsung makes some good looking TVs too. Again though, this won't bother everyone.

As well as the Samsung you might also want to have a look at the new LG models. I hear that they've improved the black levels quite a bit for the '09 range and in other respects last year's range was very good.

It looks good. £999 at Play as well. Maybe less if you have a proper Google.ÿ

seen that tv on play.com , looks great value , really well specced , even has mpeg4 tuner , and 600htz , id be happier buying after id seen a few reviews markiedee , but id be surprised if that set didnt impress , samsung are getting better all the time , they seem to be expanding while the rest are slowing down , maybe the koreans know something we dont ... i have to say though , im watching ,, the hottest place on earth ,, on bbc hd on my 46pz8b , and it looks stunning , for 950 euros ,, i cant complain ... if i were you id check out the new pannys before i hand over any cash , i think plasma still has the edge over lcds , especially on price , a 52 inch lcd from a top brand is way more dough ...

I didn't look. Not sure it's even out yet (I think it said 'available to pre-order' at Play). I just did a quick Google to find a picture of it. According to the specs it's a G5 panel though, so unless they've botched the processing side, it should be pretty good.
