It may be me that is the problem as I got a proper PC virus for the first time ever a few days back and the laptop had to go away and get sorted. Since I got it back I have been having problems posting. Most of the time I have to preview first and then post. Then I find Windows just freezes on me and I have to close it down. I have also been informed that I am now a banned user, but it has done that before. Another thing, the compose/options/related/preview tabs are disjointed and do not look as if they have loaded properly.

Is it me or is it you?

Looks like it might be you. Have been using the site for the past few days via a variety of shaky internet connections, and as far as I know it's been behaving itself...

Well I have the disjointed tabs in various browsers, which is probably my fault (but not top of my list). Not aware of any other problems, in fact bearing in mind the traffic we've had since the 26th, I think it's been behaving remarkably well...

JohnDuncan:You probably need a new one.

Y'see, JD didn't get where he is today without being able to offer that level of technical insight...

idc:I want a new computer you see.

QED

Bad news, the new Vaio has not fixed the problems. The site become inactive, I have problems posting, many actions require an extra click to persuade action such as bringing up the reply box. I have again been told that I have been banned.

I am now using Google Chrome and the problems are the same as with IE, but at least when it becomes inactive I only lose the one tab on Chrome.

Do I need another new computer?

if only youd bought a mac

in fact its either your wireless network or your connection to the internet thats the problem

if you want to rule out the wifi as the problem connect to your internet router with an ethernet cable if the problems continue then check with your isp provider if not then check your wifi configuration

yes saw from your other posts that the internet is fine

trouble is the problem could be related to the path as in through which routers etc you are getting to the whf site as it does sound that somewhere along the path something is timing out in which case theres not a lot you can do as the internet doesnt work on a fixed path

however you could try disconnecting from the whf site then clearing your cache and also your cookies and connecting again

JohnDuncan:Hm. Where are you in the country idc?hes in glasgow do you suspect the weather

good if he could run trace route

one off:

Not the weather per se, but I don't know where all our CDN nodes are, so will pass this on to our ops guys and see if they're aware of issues.

And indeed idc, if you run "traceroute cdn.whathifi.com" in a command window and send me the results, that might be helpful (though tbh I don't know if it will)

John, I am Renfrewshire to the west of Glasgow.

One off, I have seen advice in the past about clearing your cache. I thought it meant go and find all you small change and taking it to the bank. How do I clear my cache?

Cache cleared, logged off and back on again.

Something else I have noticed is that the link and unlink icons are greyed out. JD I need more instruction as to how to do your command thingy. Thanks

rambling off topic, but one for JD - I've recently switched to Google Chrome, and the "link" option doesn't appear to work. Is it just me, or an interface issue? Switched back to IE and it worked okay. Cheers

Google Chrome and Safari are basically the same thing, and I know we have issues with Safari (when you have the rich text editor turned on), so is the same thing I suspect.

Sorting out cross-browser behaviour is one of the things high up my list for this year...

To idc - Start/Run - type "cmd" in that box and press return, you get a 'DOS window' - at that command prompt type "traceroute cdn.whathifi.com". Copy the results and mail them to me - I think you have my mail address from prior mail exchanges.

Sorry, but where is Start/run?

I also have lost the link options when using Chrome. Another issue with Chrome is that if I post a picture or smiley it goes to the start of the page before any text. I am able to highlight and drag and drop pictures and smilies to where I want them.
