I have a friend who used to work at BestBuy and is now a custom installer. One of the reasons he left BestBuy is because they would always push their salespeople to upsell cables to shoppers buying TVs and BluRays. The profit margins on cables were far higher than on any other hardware.

I think it's fair to be skeptical on cables but I wouldn't group them all in the 'waste of money' category.
