I've just moved to a new house where the floor are polished wood the walls are masonite AND its up on stumps so the bright reflections-hi and mid frequencies bouncing of the walls and echoing is truly awful-any suggestions how to fix/patch up solutions? the room is about 8x5m

Short of using some studio-style reflectors, diffusers and/or absorbers - which are all pretty ugly - the best bet is some soft furnishings, rugs, bookcases, etc. Anything to break up those flat surfaces.

The best thing would be to first test the room to see what exactly is what, as in what freqs are giving you problems, something like the XTZ room analyzer is a brilliant little tool for measuring your room, you can has a guess at what areas are given you problems. You can start with some simple methods to get you started, such as treating your first reflection, that's the sides, floor then ceiling. Then some bass traps in the corners to give you a nice tight bass response. Things such as carpets, curtains, can help, but only in the upper midrange to treble regions, trapping 60Hz downwards is much more difficult if you have problems in those areas, it depends on speaker size, and room size.

I think to furnish the room tastefully is a more realistic option unless you want your loung to look like a cheap recording studio booth

Put a nice, thick rug on the floor halfway between you and the hi-fi...works miricales!
