Sansui SR222 MKII v Rotel RP3000

having just recently got the whole vinyl thing, i started off with a direct drive TT as i wanted the ability to adjust the pitch if it were neccessary, as in the past i'd had turntables (belt driven) that were pretty poor at maintaining speed.

i've found myself on ebay (again) looking at other TT's to compare the Rotel to, so i bought a Sansui yesterday, to compare against the rotel, and see which i prefer, and if there is any great difference in abilities.

what sort of results do you think i'm going to get?

i will use the same Nagaoka cart on each TT to compare.

There were 2 competing budget decks that were the standard recomendation back in the 70s and one was the Sansui.....the other was the Trio KD 1033B, which I owned.

Was the Sansui mark 2 the shiny black one, or the one that looked like the Trio that Cno mentions, and also the Pioneer PL-12D?

Congrats on your purchase, either way!

It was the sleek black one, as compared to the rather utilitarian design of the Trio.

thank you, yes, it's the gloss black one. i've asked about the cart/stylus and the seller says it has a revolver cart on it ... dunno what this is going to be like, but i'll give it a try.

i just hope it holds good speed. and sounds as good as it looks.

I will be interested in what you think....I remember that the Trio was a good rung down from the Rega Planar 2 (which was a step down from the Planar 3).

this should be landing on my doorstep for the weekend, i'm looking forward to testing it out. i was genuinely surprised with the rotel, for a 40 year old piece of kit it sounded really good. and since adding the Nagaoka cart, it has improved a lot.

i've heard good things about the Sansui, so i'm hoping for a little improvement in performance.

Back in the day, I had an RP5300 direct drive. It was ok for the most part, but every now and then there would be a rapid reduction in speed before picking back up again. Not good. I put up with it for a few years, but later replaced it with a Rega, much better.

The Rotel i have has been pretty good, considering i've torn it apart twice since buying it.

it is whisper quiet and holds speed really well. most importantly, it gave me my first real taste of how good vinyl can sound. it looks completely different now, covered in red vinyl, with a red sponge/foam sheet on top, i also added felt to the platter to dull the ring, it sounds great.

curiosity has got the best of me, so i wanted to try the sansui. i'll be collecting it tomorrow, and giving it a good workout over the weekend.

ultimately, this is another stepping stone on the way to a gyro or a WB full circle. or something of that ilk.,

most importantly, my passion for music has been given a boost with the addition of vinyl to my set-up. i'm under no illusion that the leema amp has had a hand in this too. the phono stage(s) in that are fantastic.

What a shame.

Thing is, TTs are hard to pack well, even with the original materials, which very few people keep and even fewer know how use to protect the vital bits. They are delicate instruments, unlike many CDPs and amps!
