Just set up a newly aquired Radius 5 I aquired off e-bay......I am using it with a Denon DL-160 high output MC cartridge, its paired with my Kandy K2 amp and MS Mezzo 6 speakers, after the lengthy set up process I put on my first record to say I'm disappointed is an understatement it sounds awful is as if I'm only using the tweeters on the speakers there is just no bass at all.....the K2 has no tone controls so I can't compensate. I'm biwiring but all connections are fine checkede the cd player just to make sure...is there anything on the arm set up that can be THAT wrong that the sound is bass-less. I used this cartridge on my LInn Axis and it sounded fine(with same amp speakers) a little bass-lite but nothing like this....any suggestions welcome.....

mmmm have checked the cartridge tags? Sorry if I am asking you to suck eggs!

How old is the cart?

BBB has a Roksan TT, he may see this and give you some helpful advice

Not sure I can be of any help really. I haven't had my 5.2 for that long, and it's been away for a fair amount of that time being fixed, so I'm still working with it really.

It doesn't sound over bassy, but that's very dependent on what I'm actually playing.

Charlie Jefferson has a Radius 5, he may be able to shed some light on your problem.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I'm pretty sure the Roksan Kandy K2 is moving magnet only although I could be wrong; this may well be the problem. I've got one somewhere;I'll go and check it and verify.

Yep, it's moving magnet. You may be putting it through an mc preampand through line level but you don't say. If you're not, you should be. Or change the cart to mm.

That was my original thought, however he has a high output MC that should be ok - maybe this is the problem - the Denon might need more loading?

I ran a high output MC throught my Brio R & Elicit R no problem though, the Denon could be different? Floyd may be able to hep?

You're right, the denon cart should be ok with mm phono input. Oh. That's that theory blown out of the water. Still could check it if he has a preamp.

Thanks for the help, I have no preamp, but used this cartridge for a couple of years with no issues with my Linn Axis and the K2, checked all connections the blue input wire to cart is not the best of connections a bit loose, but surely that would not effect it to this degree, went back over the set up balanced the tracking weight again, double checked the azimuth(unipivot...) the only thing I've not played with is the height of the arm..will try this next although it seems parallel with my protractor. On the plus side sounds great with acoustic only stuff......wife is none to happy I promised her a revalation over my broken axis....I am in contact with the seller and he assures me it was perfect with his Ortofon 2M Black, the Denon cart is 3 years old but only had a years use as when my Axis broke I went back to my old Planar 2 with the cart it had fitted never got round to changing them....

Must be something Im not doing properly somewhere........frustrating...

If I was in your position now, having checked everything, I would a) borrow a preamp and see if it made any difference and/or b) stick a moving magnet in and see what happens. If the moving magnet doesnt work through the Kandy mm stage then something is clearly very wrong. Hope you sort it out;it sounds very frustrating.

Tried an old Linn K9 that I had replaced on the Axis....exactly the same....was getting seriously frustrated.....up for trying anything now.....I have my Kandy connected to my Yamaha RX-V1900 home Theatre amp on the bypass connection....so the Kandy controls the front speakers, but when the Yam is on as long as the Kandy has power on I get full control through the Yam....so I connected the ttable to the Yamaha.....and low and behold there is my bass - perfect....so what is the problem with the Kandy ? Up until today my Rega Planar 2 was connected to its phono stage and it sounded fine, put in a ttable worth 10x as much sounds crap, but perfect through a home theatre amp, gonna hav to plug in the P2 again see if it sounds the same......is the phono stage on the Kandy faulty ? If the P2 has lost bass it would seem so....will be interesting to find out...if it is faulty will always wonder how it should sound grrr. Didnt take an extended warranty with the amp bought in 2009....

This is very strange - it seems too much coincicdence your phono stage has failed the monent you have got a new Turntble? Can you try your old TT again through the Kandy phono? Failing that perhaps a new phono in the Kandy!

Hope you get it sorted!

Yup.....tried the old Rega P2 on the Kandy....no bass, vocals all hissy/ distorted.....so definitely the phono stage.....checked all other inputs on the amp all perfect.....so new phono stage is next step....so glad I kept that old K9 was about to spend on a new mm cartridge. Looking at phono stages I like the sound of the reviews for the Graham Slee Gram 2 Communicator.....would this do my Radius justice ? Also reading about these phono stages I connect to normal line level input...so is the Kandy responsible for 'half' the amplification or is your phono stage the final say in how the ttable will sound.....? Any other suggeastions regarding phono stage recommendation are more than welcome....

Graham Slee will loan you a phono stage, you just need to join the forum. Failing that you could see if Roksan will repair it as a goodwill gesture - not sure what their customer service is like.

PS you can use another line level input for an external phono stage - if all your line level inputs are ok then its just the phono that is borked

How strange. The Kandy is such a sturdy amp;it's hard to imagine that anything could go wrong with it. The phono stage is excellent for an integrated. I agree with steve re contacting Roksan to see if they can do anything for you. It's worth a try. Glad you're on the way to sorting it out.

Roksan stuff has a 5 year warranty, and I found their customer service to be good.

Go to the retailer you bought it from as your first port of call.

Thanks for that BBB didn't know there was an automatic 5 year warranty on the Roksan......I bought it from Peter Tyson Hifi(Hifix their online shop)...back in june 09 so I'm just within the 5 years.......just wondering though in your dealings with Roksan did you have to cover postage costs for your ttable.....because the K2 amp must weigh in excess of 30lbs so it will cost a fortune to post.....I can buy a decent phono stage for 60-85 quid and connect to one of the other inputs on the Roksan, so I might actually be out of pocket even if I get it fixed for free......also what documentation would I need I seem to have deleted the email with the invoice(a few PCs down the line from then) either that or I've hidden it so well from the wife I cant remember which folder its in I'm sure HIfix would have a copy ....depends how long they save their records of purchase for. What is also swaying me to the new phono stage is I can be up and running before New Year if I send it off to Roksan its going to be a few weeks probably......just dont know now....

I'm not sure the warranty is automatic, I think you would probably have needed to register your product with Roksan. I would ring Peter Tyson, I'm sure they would have a record of your purchase, then they'll be able to tell you if a repair under warranty is possible.

I had to cover the cost of postage to the retailer, which including insurance wasn't cheap, but if you do need a courier, I've found this site to be really good, and usually cheaper than Royal Mail. http://www.parcel2go.com/?gclid=CKHJjNP55rgCFSGWtAodiT0AGw This will also give you an idea whether it's financially viable to get the repair done, or get yourself a seperate phono stage.

If you live near the retailer, you could always take the amp in to them, as they and Roksan will cover the postage cost for the other journeys.

(Also, It would be worth your while to contact the ebay seller of the Radius, as Roksan will transfer over the remaining warranty, as long as you have the original receipt, or the original purchasers address details, the date of purchase, and the retailers name.)

Good luck

Just thought, I'm extremely sure that HiFix is the online section for Frank Harvey Hi Fi, not Peter Tyson.

There's a guy on here from Frank Harvey Hi Fi, David, who may be able to help you after Christmas.
