Very basic I'm afraid. I downloaded itunes just for hahas and decided i would rip and mp3 in itunes and the same song with wmp in the same format and see if i can hear a difference. However, despite the fact i think ive got all the import setting right, i obviously havent as the one i make with itunes always comes out as an mpeg 4.

Anyone know where im going wrong?

EDIT - every time i go back to check the settings they need resetting as they have put themselves back the default settings.

Will deal with settings, er, resetting in a mo (ie I'll have to investigate). You sure you're getting mpeg 4? In 'kind' my files say mpeg audio file, but if you right click and 'get info' (this is a mac I'm talking about, probably 'properties' in iTunes for Win), the file type is mp3. For lossless files, it's m4a, incidentally. Can you just check that before we go any further?

Cheers John.

Just ripped it again changing nothing and when i right click on it on the desktop and go to properties, it says: MPEG-4 Audio File. WMP doesn't recognise it but itunes does if thats any help. When i change the programme type for it to wmp, it still won't play it but the look/"skin" of it changes and it actually says MPEG-4 on it, if you se what i mean

OK, and what are the rip settings in iTunes (version 8.1 presumably)? I'll be firing my laptop up shortly for experimentation....

AAC Encoder

itunes Plus

128kbps (mono), 256kbps (stereo), 44.100khz, VBR, optimized for MMX/SSE2.

Error correcion unchecked.

Clicked on "About itunes" and it does say 8.1.

Thought i had succeeded a number of times, but it seems not.

Yeah i know. and changing them looks easy enough but doesnt seem to be working for me.

EDIT - Just realised, however, John may have been asking me to tell him the settings i was trying to use when i set it for mp3 ripping. Apologies if thats the case John

Incidentally, a friend mentioned to me earlier that he tried to change from the itunes default to WAV rips, and it played him up but one day just came good, as sometimes these things seem to do.

WMP can play AAC files if you have an appropriate codec. One can be bought for a loss price from http://www.3ivx.com/ there are probably other free ones available elsewhere on the net.

Windows 7 can play AAC natively without additional codecs.

You can also get AAC lossless playback in WMP but I don't have the link to hand - will post later if I remember.

EDIT: http://www.dsp-worx.de/ look at the 8th Jan 2007 entry for how to play apple lossless in wmp. Also check out a program called music bridge for a method of syncing playlists/meta data between Itunes and WMP. I've used this a couple of times and seems to work reasonably well.
