I've been in the fortunate position, thanks to a combination of good timing and some kind of longevity with hifi, of having three of the best CD players of the last 20 years, plus a current universal disc spinner. I thought it'd be fun to have a bit of a shootout comparing the best of 1993, 2003 and 2009 with something from the present day. Purists who are scoffing at using a multi-format player can check their attitudes at the door, or collect their coats from the cloakroom!
