I don't want too much bass that the house shakes but I'd like more bass than what I'm getting at the moment. The problem is I don't know if 50 watts is too little or 150 watts far too much?

More bass, or lower bass? A subwoofer is designed to reproduce very low bass that hi-fi speakers struggle to - if you want more bass, you need larger speakers.

Absolutely.

However, as shown in an other thread the OP is a complete beginner in these matters (as we all were once) and requires substantial guidance. Good luck with that.

He is at the stage where good equals loud with plenty of perceived bass, a proper budget hi-fi system is not what he needs at this point in time.
