Receiver - Sony or Yamaha - What To Buy??

Hi!!

I'm buying a new receiver. Not sure which to buy

I have looked at:

Sony STR-DA2400ES

Sony STR-DA3400ES

Yamaha RX-V863

Which is better, Sony or Yamaha?

Pros and/or cons with any of them?

Other receivers in the same price range which are better??

Both the Sony models are very good, but I'd probably go for the 2400 on sheer value for money.

Can't comment on the Yamaha, as it's not a model sold in the UK, so we haven't tested it. We get the DSP-AX763 amplifier instead, which is extremely good, but in rather short supply at the moment.

Is Yamaha DSP-AX863SE almost the same as Yamaha RX-V863??

I will mostly use the receiver for music.

In general, do you have best experience with Sony or Yamaha?

Other receivers which are bettter?

The DSP-AX863SE is a rather different beast to the RX-V863 - the 'SE' version has no radio tuner, and has undergone some further tuning to enhance the sound.

But for the reasons mentioned above, we haven't tested the RX-V863, so couldn't really comment on the relative performance.

Both Sony and Yamaha make very good AV amps/receivers, as do a number of other brands - have a look at our reviews here to narrow down your shortlist.

Of course the trouble you will have is auditioning your shortlist! Nobody seems to have any stock of the Yamaha 863SE (to buy or audition) and nobody with a listening room seems to stock the Sonys.

I was quite interested in the Sony 3400ES, but it's a lot of money to spend without reading a review or performing an audition.
