Question on swapping interconnects

Sorry if this comes across as a silly question, but is it necessary to turn equipment off before swapping interconnects?

Particularly important for satellite connections as they are powered.

And while you can't harm yourself by swapping audio interconnects while the equipment is on, you can send some nasty noises through the speakers, and have I have known damage to occur in this way in the past.
