I have my CD player (Denone UDCM7) connected to my amp (denon AVR4306) via its optical digital connection. WHat I'd like to know is, when you use the optical or digital connections is the D-A conversion done by the amp or are the digital connections just another means of transferring the signal? The main reason for the questions is that I suspect the 24bit DAC's in my amp are probably better than those in my now very much ageing CD player?

Yes - if you use any form of digital connection the conversion is done in the amp.

Thanks - I figured that was the case - just wasnt sure. No wonder my old CD player and tv/dvd sounds so good! I have a Grundig Lenaro 96cm tv with integrated digital tv tuner and dvd player and piped out to my amp via the coaxial digital out, sounds awesome.
