Question 2 - what will improve musical output?

Regardless of whether or not I get the Sony TDM-NC1 working properly (see earlier post), I have another question. As per my signature, mine is very much a budget system, a first foray into A/V land, very gradually put together and tweaked here and there. Initially it was all about HD telly and Blu-Ray, but I also use it for music. After all, the WHF review of the STRDG820 did suggest the unit is not bad for music, especially at the budget end of things.

When I play music through this setup (PC as source) either through the PS3 as media server or an Airport express with optical connection, I find the sound/timing to be rather poor. The sound is....hmmm....well "messy" is the best description I can give. The source tracks are all 256Kb MP3 ripped from CD using iTunes so not too shoddy.

My question is this: What will improve the audio quality?

I'm inclined to think adding dedicated hifi speakers for music would make a difference over the Tannoy surround fronts? Would that be the best option? Would it really make a big difference? £150 would secure the new Mission MX1's or maybe the Tannoy Mercury V1's. If I went for the latter, could I use those in place of my current Tannoy front speakers in the surround set up?

Changing the main speakers will make a dramatic effect.

I have the Tannoys in my living room to placate SWMBO regarding speakers cluttering up the room and while they decent for TV & movies and are ok-ish for background music they do not come close to what I would call Hi-Fi.

If you can, you must!

On the ps3 use these settings for listening to music....

Settings --> Music Settings --> Bitmapping --> Type 3

Settings --> Music Settings --> Output Frequency --> 44.1/88.2/176.4

That didn't seem to make a great deal of difference.

New speakers it is then.

you may also want to consider the DAC in the chain, you can buy dedicated DACs that will make a big different to audio quality, particularly of music stored on a computer... perhaps the next step after the speakers ;)
